Chapter 3 - THE FRONT ROW OF LIARS

Mary entered the ballroom alone.

Whispers followed her between the rows of white chairs.

Her bridal robe moved quietly across the polished floor.

She had no bouquet.

No music accompanied her.

No groom waited at the altar.

Yet every person in the room watched her as though the ceremony had begun.

Evelyn Cole hurried toward her.

“Mary, sweetheart.”

Mary stopped several feet away.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Whatever happened upstairs can be handled discreetly.”

“You know what happened upstairs?”

Evelyn’s eyes shifted.

“I know Ethan sometimes makes mistakes.”

Mary looked past her.

Ethan’s father, Charles Cole, sat rigidly in the first row.

Ethan’s younger brother stared at the floor.

Two of his cousins avoided Mary’s gaze.

The entire family looked uncomfortable.

None of them looked surprised.

“How long have you known about Olivia?”

Evelyn reached for Mary’s hand.

Mary stepped back.

“This is not the place.”

Mary turned toward the guests.

“I disagree.”

Her voice carried through the ballroom.

The room fell silent.

“My wedding has been canceled.”

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Mary continued.

“Minutes ago, I found Ethan with my maid of honor in the presidential suite.”

Several guests turned toward the ballroom doors.

Others immediately reached for their phones.

Mary lifted one hand.

“Hotel security has disabled all live streaming from this floor.”

“You are free to discuss what happened after you leave.”

“But before anyone repeats the version Ethan’s family will undoubtedly invent, you will hear the truth from me.”

Charles Cole stood.

“This is a private family matter.”

Mary looked at him.

“You made it a business matter when you attached the Blackridge merger to my marriage.”

The color drained from Charles’s face.

Most of the guests did not understand.

The bankers seated near the front did.

The attorneys did.

The three Whitmore Capital board members near the aisle exchanged alarmed looks.

Mary continued.

“The merger has been suspended.”

“All bridge financing provided to Cole Development is frozen pending a fraud investigation.”

Charles gripped the back of his chair.

“You cannot do that.”

“I authorized the funding.”

“You authorized nothing.”

Mary looked toward Julian.

He handed her a slim black folder.

Mary opened it.

“Whitmore Capital owns sixty-one percent of the debt issued to Cole Development.”

“I hold seventy-four percent of Whitmore Capital’s voting shares.”

A stunned silence filled the ballroom.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Charles stared at Mary as if she had transformed in front of him.

Mary closed the folder.

“You believed I was an emotionally vulnerable woman with a comfortable inheritance.”

“You encouraged your son to marry me because you thought he would gain influence over my trust.”

“You were wrong.”

The ballroom doors opened behind her.

Ethan entered with Olivia several steps behind him.

Olivia had changed into her bridesmaid gown.

Ethan had finally fixed his shirt.

He looked composed until he noticed the folder in Mary’s hand.

“Don’t listen to her.”

His voice echoed through the room.

“She’s upset.”

“She doesn’t understand the agreements her attorneys signed.”

Mary faced him.

“I understand them better than you do.”

Ethan walked down the aisle.

“You are destroying both our families over one misunderstanding.”

Mary held his gaze.

“The cameras will tell us whether it was one misunderstanding.”

Olivia stopped near the doorway.

Her face tightened.

Ethan looked at her.

Mary saw the fear pass between them.

That was when she realized the affair was only the first secret hidden inside the presidential suite.
