Chapter 14 - THE PERSON WHO OPENED THE DOOR
Police arrested Ethan in the laundry room.
The masked men were captured near the loading dock.
One was a private security contractor employed by Cole Development.
The other was the Aurelia Grand’s assistant director of operations, Marcus Vane.
Marcus had disabled the generators.
He had also opened the underground entrance for Ethan.
During questioning, Marcus admitted Charles had paid him for years.
He had provided guest information, employee records, and copies of Mary’s schedule.
Julian survived the attack with a fractured shoulder and severe concussion.
From his hospital bed, he resigned from Whitmore Capital.
Mary refused to accept the resignation immediately.
“You made decisions that protected yourself.”
Julian looked toward the window.
“Yes.”
“You also protected me tonight.”
“That does not erase what I did.”
“No.”
“It doesn’t.”
Mary placed the silver drive on his bedside table.
“Your future will be decided after the investigation.”
“Not by guilt.”
“Not by loyalty.”
“By facts.”
Julian nodded.
It was the fairest answer she could give him.
The recovered evidence revealed Marcus had sent Ethan photographs from Julian’s office.
Ethan knew about the silver drive weeks before the wedding.
The affair with Olivia had been partly intended to distract Mary while Charles searched for it.
Yet the most important discovery came from the drive itself.
A hidden folder contained a video recorded by Thomas Whitmore.
Mary watched it alone.
Her father sat behind his desk.
He looked tired.
“Mary, if you are seeing this, I failed to finish what I started.”
He explained the fraudulent transfers.
He described Charles’s attempt to gain control of Whitmore Capital.
Then his expression softened.
“Ethan may be involved.”
“I know you care for him.”
“I also know that warning you without proof may push you closer to him.”
Mary covered her mouth.
Her father had seen the danger.
He had remained silent because he feared losing her trust.
Thomas continued.
“Power will attract people who love what surrounds you.”
“Do not confuse their attention with devotion.”
“But do not let betrayal turn your heart into stone.”
“The wrong person can teach you caution.”
“They must not be allowed to teach you cruelty.”
The recording ended.
Mary sat in silence.
She had spent days planning how to destroy Ethan.
Her father’s final message reminded her that justice and revenge were not the same.
The next morning, she instructed Rebecca to cooperate fully with prosecutors.
She would not use her wealth to create special punishments.
She would not bribe witnesses.
She would not manipulate judges.
She would simply uncover everything.
