Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE PROPOSAL

Ethan’s statement did not clear him.

It placed him inside the conspiracy.

He admitted giving Charles access to Thomas Whitmore’s garage.

He admitted borrowing the car and secretly copying the electronic key.

He claimed he believed Charles only intended to intimidate Thomas before an important negotiation.

Charles told a different story.

He insisted Ethan had suggested damaging the brakes.

He said his son wanted Thomas removed because Mary would never marry him while her father remained suspicious.

The detectives listened to both men.

Neither was released.

Mary stood in the hotel library while the evidence accumulated.

She had expected to spend the evening dancing beneath chandeliers.

Instead, she watched evidence technicians carry sealed bags through the lobby.

Evelyn found her near midnight.

Ethan’s mother had removed her silver wedding hat.

Without it, she looked smaller.

Older.

“Mary, may we speak?”

Mary did not invite her to sit.

Evelyn remained near the door.

“I did not know about your father’s car.”

“Did you know about Olivia?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since February.”

Mary looked away.

February was when Evelyn invited her to lunch and called her the daughter she had always wanted.

“Why did you say nothing?”

“Charles said the company would collapse if the wedding failed.”

“Thousands of people would lose their jobs.”

Mary turned back.

“So you offered me instead.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I convinced myself Ethan would end the affair.”

“He told me Olivia meant nothing.”

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Mary’s voice sharpened.

“No.”

“You wanted the wedding.”

“You wanted my name.”

“You wanted access to my money.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I when my father died.”

“You watched Ethan become the only person I trusted.”

“You knew he was lying every time he held me.”

Evelyn had no answer.

She removed a small brass key from her purse.

“Charles keeps a private office beneath our house.”

“He never lets anyone enter.”

“Two nights ago, I heard him arguing with Ethan.”

“They mentioned a ledger.”

Mary accepted the key.

“Why give this to me now?”

Evelyn looked through the library windows at the police cars outside.

“Because my son has become his father.”

“And because I helped him become that man every time I remained silent.”

Before leaving, Evelyn stopped at the door.

“There is something else.”

“Ethan never chose the date of your proposal.”

“Charles did.”

Mary felt a chill move through her.

“Why?”

“The proposal happened one day after your father’s will was unsealed.”

“That was the day Charles learned you had inherited the voting shares.”

Mary looked down at the brass key.

May you like

Her entire relationship had not simply become convenient after her father’s death.

It had been designed around it.
