Chapter 8 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSE

At six the following morning, detectives entered the Cole family estate with a search warrant.
Mary did not go with them.
She watched the body-camera feed from Rebecca’s office.
The brass key opened a narrow door behind a wine rack in Charles’s basement.
Beyond it was a windowless room filled with filing cabinets.
One cabinet contained records connected to Cole Development.
Another held private reports about Whitmore Capital.
The final cabinet contained photographs of Mary.
Mary leaving her office.
Mary visiting her father’s grave.
Mary meeting with attorneys.
Mary entering medical clinics.
Ethan and Charles had monitored her for almost two years.
A folder labeled Stability contained reports from a private investigator.
The reports described moments when Mary cried after her father’s death.
They listed medications prescribed after the accident.
They documented therapy appointments.
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“They planned to use your grief as evidence of mental incompetence.”
Mary kept watching.
A detective opened a locked drawer.
Inside was the forged proxy Ethan had prepared.
The signature looked almost perfect.
The document named Ethan as Mary’s emergency representative.
Attached medical forms stated Mary had experienced episodes of confusion and emotional instability.
The forms contained the signature of Dr. Adrian Price.
He had treated Mary once after her father’s funeral.
Rebecca made another call.
Within an hour, Dr. Price admitted Ethan had paid him to sign incomplete evaluations.
He claimed he never understood how they would be used.
No one believed him.
Then detectives discovered a black ledger.
Charles had recorded payments to consultants, officials, and shell corporations.
One payment had been made three days before Thomas Whitmore’s death.
The recipient was a mechanic named Leonard Shaw.
Leonard had disappeared shortly after the accident.
Police believed he had moved overseas.
The ledger showed monthly payments to an account in Montana.
Leonard had never left the country.
He had been hiding under a new name.
Mary felt no victory when officers located him.
She felt only exhaustion.
By noon, Leonard had been arrested.
He confessed before sunset.
Charles hired him to weaken the brake line.
Leonard was told Thomas would notice the problem before leaving his private driveway.
Instead, the damage worsened slowly.
The brakes failed on the mountain road.
Leonard claimed Ethan delivered the payment.
Ethan denied it.
Then hotel investigators recovered deleted messages from his phone.
One message to Charles had been sent two hours after Thomas died.
It contained only four words.
Now she has no one.
Mary read the message alone.
For eighteen months, she had believed Ethan saved her from loneliness.
He had created it.
Rebecca entered quietly.
“The board meeting begins tomorrow morning.”
“Charles’s attorneys intend to challenge your authority.”
“On what basis?”
“They claim your emotional condition makes you unfit to control the company.”
May you like
Mary closed Ethan’s phone.
“Then tomorrow, they can make that argument while he is wearing handcuffs.”
