She was completely unresponsive. Marcus grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her underwater, but she was entirely limp. Her hair floated around her face like a dark halo.
He reached down to her ankle, feeling the heavy padlock securing the chain. He didn't have the key, and he couldn't break a solid steel padlock with a combat knife. He needed to free her, and he had exactly one option left. He drew his watertight sidearm from its holster. Firing a weapon underwater was incredibly dangerous—the pressure could cause the barrel to explode—but he had no choice.

He pressed the muzzle of the gun directly against the shackle of the padlock, wrapping his other hand around Elena’s leg to shield her from the debris. He squeezed the trigger.
The muffled crack vibrated violently through the water. A shockwave punched him in the chest, forcing a stream of precious bubbles from his mouth. But when he felt the metal, the lock was shattered. The chain slipped away. She was free.
