Beneath the heavy cover, Elena’s world was a sensory nightmare. The water had reached the very top of the pool, leaving only a microscopic pocket of air between the surface of the water and the taut, heavy fabric of the cover.
She pressed her face against the cold PVC, sucking in tiny, desperate breaths of stale air. But the water was still rising, the high-pressure jets filling every available inch of space.

Her leg cramped violently. The chain dug into her flesh, grinding against the bone. She slipped, her head dipping below the freezing water. Panic—primal and consuming—flooded her system. She thrashed, her hands blindly clawing at the impenetrable ceiling above her. She needed air. Her lungs burned as if they were filled with acid.
She broke the surface one last time, her lips finding the very last pocket of oxygen. She inhaled deeply just as the water swallowed the space completely. She was fully submerged. The countdown had begun.
