Chapter 15: The Final Breath

Chapter 15: The Final Breath
Marcus wrapped his arm around Elena’s waist and kicked fiercely upward, propelling them toward the surface. He aimed for the faint, dim glow of the hole he had cut in the cover.
His lungs were screaming. Black spots danced on the edges of his vision. He broke the surface, gasping for the humid air of the pool house, and hauled Elena’s head above the water.
"Elena! Breathe!" he shouted, swimming her toward the edge. He dragged her heavy, limp body onto the wet tiles, immediately beginning chest compressions. "Come on, come on!"
He breathed into her mouth, pumping her chest, ignoring the exhaustion threatening to pull him under. Water poured from her lips, but her eyes remained closed, her skin pale and cold.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over them. Marcus looked up, freezing mid-compression. Standing over them was not Victor, who was still unconscious on the floor, but a man holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at Marcus’s head.

"You always were too loyal for your own good, Marcus," Julian Vangarde whispered, pulling the hammer back.
Elena’s eyes violently snapped open, and she took a sharp, rattling gasp of air—just as the deafening crack of a gunshot echoed through the cavernous room.
