"Why?" Elena sobbed, pulling desperately against the heavy iron chain that anchored her to the pool's main drain at the deep end. The chain allowed her to stand in the shallow area, but the floor was designed on a steep incline.

"Because of a signature," Victor said, turning his back to her and walking toward the main control console on the far wall. "Seven years ago, you thought you married into a safe haven. You thought my brother, Julian, loved you. But you were merely a vessel, Elena. A temporary placeholder for the Vangarde heir you currently carry in your womb."

Victor’s hand hovered over a large, glowing red button. "But the true tragedy? Julian didn’t sell you out alone. We needed your father’s blessing to liquidate your trust upon your... untimely demise. He signed the paperwork yesterday. Your own family signed your death warrant, Elena. For thirty million dollars."

He slammed his fist down on the button. A loud, mechanical grinding noise echoed through the cavernous room. At the far edge of the pool, the thick, impenetrable motorized pool cover began to slide forward.
