Chapter 5: Interception

Chapter 5: Interception
Marcus reached the glass atrium connecting the main mansion to the pool house. The double doors were magnetically sealed. He didn't hesitate. He raised his heavy tactical boot and shattered the glass pane next to the keypad, reaching through the jagged shards to manually yank the interior release lever.
As he burst into the corridor, two of Victor’s private, off-the-books mercenaries stepped out from the shadows, assault rifles raised.
"Stand down, Marcus," the taller one barked. "Mr. Vangarde's orders."

Marcus didn’t slow his sprint. He dropped to his knees, sliding across the polished marble floor to evade the first burst of suppressed gunfire. As he slid, he aimed his sidearm and fired two precise shots into the taller mercenary's kneecaps. The man collapsed with a howl. Marcus used his momentum to sweep the legs of the second guard, springing up and driving the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple. The guard went limp.
Marcus didn't check their pulses. He sprinted toward the heavy oak doors of the pool house. Time was running out.
