Chapter 15: The New Beginning
A year to the day after the wedding that never happened, Owen and Ruth sat on the patio of the Bennett estate, sipping coffee in the morning sun.
Ruth looked vibrant. Without the chemical influence of Camille’s tampering, her mind was sharp, her energy restored. She was reading the financial pages of the morning paper, occasionally making notes in the margins.
“The quarterly reports look excellent, Owen,” she said, peering over her reading glasses. “Though I think we should reconsider the supply contract with Apex.”
Owen smiled, taking a sip of his coffee. “I already drafted the termination notice. It’s on your desk for review.”
Ruth set the paper down and looked at her son. There were no more shadows in this house, no more whispers or doubts. The estate, once a crime scene, had become a home again.

Owen looked out over the sprawling green lawn, the dark memory of that bridal suite finally fading into the past. “Yes, we did, Mom. We won.”
