Chapter 2: The Empty Chair

The Bennett Marine corporate headquarters was eerily quiet on a Sunday, but the executive floor was ablaze with fluorescent light. Owen, alongside two corporate attorneys and a lead detective, stood in Nolan Price’s expansive corner office. The shred bin had already been confiscated, but the true damage was digital.

“He wiped his hard drive,” one of the IT specialists announced, pulling a flash drive from the tower. “But he was sloppy. The $14.6 million transfer to Westhaven Strategic Holdings was scheduled for 4:00 p.m., but there was a secondary wire—two million dollars—that cleared in the Bahamas late Friday afternoon.”

Owen stared at the empty leather chair where Nolan used to sit. They had built the employee trust together. Nolan had shaken the hands of the shipyard workers, promised their retirements were secure, and then methodically planned to bleed them dry.

“We stopped the fourteen million,” the detective said, placing a hand on Owen’s shoulder. “But Nolan is in the wind with the two million. And Camille isn’t talking. She lawyered up the second she hit the precinct.”
