Nolan was a creature of habit and luxury; he wouldn't stay in a cheap motel. Vargas narrowed down Nolan's location to a string of high-end short-term rentals in South Beach. But to draw him out, they needed bait.
Working with the federal authorities, Owen executed a risky play. He intentionally leaked a fabricated document to the press—a fake subpoena suggesting the FBI had unlocked Nolan’s encrypted crypto-wallet, the one holding the two million dollars.

“They have the wallet,” Camille hissed into her burner phone. “Impossible,” Nolan’s voice crackled on the other end. “It’s cold storage.” “They have it, Nolan! If you leave without me, I swear to God, I will hand them the decryption keys to the offshore accounts.”
