Chapter 1: The Golden Cage

The Grand Atrium of the Sterling Plaza was a monument to untouchable privilege. Crystal chandeliers, heavy with a thousand prismatic tears, cast a flawless, golden illumination over the city’s elite. Champagne flowed like a river of liquid diamonds, poured into flutes by an army of invisible, silent staff.

Victoria Sterling reigned over the room like a monarch holding court. Wrapped in custom Milanese silk that clung to her like a second skin, her neck was adorned with the heart of a diamond mine—a necklace worth more than the lifetimes of every worker in the building. She despised the staff. To her, they were nothing more than moving furniture, annoying necessities that breathed the same expensive, climate-controlled air as her billionaire husband, Arthur.

Tonight was a celebration of Arthur’s latest corporate conquest, a merger that solidified his monopoly over the globe's clean energy grid. But amid the sea of backslapping politicians and sycophantic socialites, a single anomaly existed. A young waitress, her dark hair pulled into a severe bun, her hands slightly trembling as she balanced a heavy silver tray of caviar canapés.

Victoria noticed the tremor. Her eyes narrowed. Weakness in her presence was an insult.
