I couldn't risk keeping Hannah at the diner anymore. We moved her to a fortified subterranean safehouse Marcus maintained beneath an abandoned auto shop on the South Side.
But the cartel had resources we underestimated. They tracked the GPS in one of the mercenaries' radios we had forgotten to smash.
At 2:00 AM, the reinforced steel doors of the auto shop began to buckle under the heat of a thermite breaching charge.
"Sicarios," Marcus growled, racking a shotgun. "At least a dozen."

"Protect Hannah," I ordered.
As the steel door melted and caved in, heavily armed cartel enforcers swarmed into the garage. I didn't wait for them to find cover. I moved with a lethal fluidity I hadn't used since the Cold War, transitioning between targets, my Sig Sauer barking in the confined space. Blood sprayed across the rusted car parts. The smell of cordite and copper filled the air.
