Night fell, suffocating the city in darkness. We were twenty-four hours into Grant's ultimatum. He had expected me to be begging on his doorstep by now, pleading for mercy, offering my daughter up like a sacrificial lamb to save my livelihood.

Instead, he received a terrifying silence.

At midnight, the security alarms tripped. Elias, who had been sitting quietly in the corner polishing a suppressed submachine gun, stood up. "Perimeter breached. Four tangos. Heavily armed. They aren't here with clipboards this time, Evelyn. They’re here to burn the place down."

I looked at Hannah, who was trembling behind the stainless steel counters of the kitchen. I kissed her forehead. "Stay down, sweetie. Mom has to work."

I killed the main breaker. The diner plunged into pitch blackness, illuminated only by the intermittent flashes of lightning outside. We took our positions. The hunt had begun.
