Chapter 4: The First Move

The Holloways didn't wait. By 2:00 PM, my bank accounts were frozen. A notification on my phone confirmed that Hannah’s credit cards had been terminated, and her car had been reported stolen. Grant was playing the textbook abuser’s game: isolate, starve, and terrify.

At 3:15 PM, a slick, black SUV pulled into the diner’s parking lot. Two men in cheap suits stepped out, carrying clipboards. They bypassed the locked front door and hammered on the glass.

"City health inspectors!" one of them shouted, though the heavy bulge of a shoulder holster ruined the disguise. "Open up, or we condemn the building!"

I watched them through the slatted blinds. Grant thought he could intimidate me with low-level thugs masquerading as city officials. He thought shutting down Carter's Table would break my spirit.

"Arthur," I said without looking away from the window. "Find out who these two belong to. Marcus, show them the exit. Politely."
