Chapter 5: Polite Evictions

Marcus stepped out the back door and flanked the two thugs in the pouring rain. I watched on the security feed as he approached them from behind, his footsteps completely silent despite his heavy boots.

Before the first thug could turn around, Marcus had his wrist locked in a brutal joint manipulation, driving him to his knees in the puddles. The second thug reached for his jacket, but Marcus drew his combat knife and pressed the serrated edge against the man's throat in one fluid, blindingly fast motion.

Even through the thick glass, I could read Marcus's lips. Get in the car and drive.

The thugs scrambled into their SUV, tires squealing as they peeled out of the lot. Marcus walked back inside, wiping the rainwater from his bald head.

"Private security," Marcus reported. "Holloway payroll. They’re getting desperate early."

"They aren't desperate yet," I replied, chambering a round into my Sig Sauer. "But they will be."
