Chapter 1: The Cold Truth

The silence that followed Julian’s words was heavier than the humid night air. Bianca stood frozen by the edge of the infinity pool, her manicured hands trembling slightly. The icy, confident predator from a moment ago was gone, replaced by a deer caught in the blinding headlights of her own ruined future.

"Julian," Bianca stammered, taking a hesitant step backward. "Baby, it's not what it looks like. She slipped. I was trying to figure out how to pull her up without falling in myself."

Julian ignored her. He moved with a terrifying, deliberate calmness, stepping around the scattered red roses. He knelt by the pool, ignoring the expensive fabric of his tailored suit as the water soaked through the knees, and reached down. His strong hands gripped Martha’s forearms, pulling his coughing, shivering mother out of the water and onto the warm marble deck. He stripped off his suit jacket and wrapped it tightly around her trembling shoulders.

"I've got you, Mom. You're safe," he murmured, his voice softening only for her.

Martha clung to his shirt, tears mixing with the chlorinated water on her face. "She... she was going to let me drown, Julian."

"I know," Julian said. He stood up slowly, turning to face the woman he had almost married. The warmth in his dark eyes had been replaced by an arctic void. "Security," he spoke clearly into his smartwatch. "Get to the pool deck immediately."

"Julian, please!" Bianca shrieked, dropping the sweet facade entirely. "You're going to take the word of a senile old woman over mine? She's crazy! She provoked me!"

"I heard every word, Bianca," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "The wedding is off. Your access to my accounts is terminated. And if you ever come within a hundred yards of my mother again, I won't just ruin you—I'll bury you."

Two burly security guards burst through the glass doors.

"Escort Ms. Laurent off the property," Julian ordered, not breaking eye contact with Bianca. "She leaves with nothing but the clothes on her back."
