Part 2 Chapter 15: The Siege at Hale Estate

Part 2
Chapter 15: The Siege at Hale Estate
The Hale estate disappeared into darkness.
Not a single light remained.
The emergency generators, designed to withstand earthquakes and regional blackouts, had failed simultaneously. Every security monitor went black. The electronic gates froze in place.
For one unsettling moment, silence covered the property.
Then the perimeter alarms began screaming.
Marcus Bennett was already moving.
"Everyone to your assigned positions!"
The former FBI agents scattered through the mansion with practiced precision. Some secured the entrances while others rushed Martha Hale toward the reinforced safe room beneath the west wing.
Julian grabbed his mother by the arm.
"We're going downstairs."
Martha resisted.
"The journal—"
"Forget the journal."
"No."
She pulled free.
"If Eleanor risked her life to protect it, we're not leaving it behind."
Julian hesitated only a second before snatching the leather journal from the kitchen table.
"Now we go."
Outside the estate...
Six matte-black SUVs rolled silently to a stop beyond the main gate.
The men inside wore identical charcoal tactical uniforms with no insignias, no flags, and no names.
Professional.
Disciplined.
Invisible.
The team leader adjusted the earpiece hidden beneath his collar.
"Perimeter secured."
A calm voice answered through encrypted radio.
"No unnecessary casualties."
"Retrieve the archive."
"If possible..."
"...bring Julian Hale alive."
The team leader understood immediately.
The order had come directly from Samuel Vance.
Inside the mansion...
Marcus opened a reinforced weapons locker hidden behind the library bookshelves.
He handed compact pistols to the two security officers before turning to Julian.
"You still remember the range?"
Julian accepted the firearm.
"I was hoping I'd never need to."
Marcus gave a faint smile.
"So was I."
A security technician hurried into the room.
"They've jammed every external communication channel."
"No internet."
"No satellite."
"No cell service."
Marcus frowned.
"Landlines?"
"Dead."
"They isolated us completely."
Julian looked toward the dark windows.
"They planned this."
Marcus answered quietly.
"They've probably been planning it for years."
Suddenly—
A single spotlight illuminated the front lawn.
One figure stepped forward.
Perfectly tailored black overcoat.
Silver hair.
Hands resting casually behind his back.
Samuel Vance.
He stood nearly one hundred yards from the mansion.
Completely alone.
As if he had arrived for a business meeting rather than a siege.
Julian stared through the library window.
"So..."
"He really is alive."
Marcus lowered the binoculars.
"He wants us to see him."
Samuel slowly raised one hand.
Not a threat.
Not a weapon.
Simply a polite greeting.
Then he smiled.
A loudspeaker hidden somewhere outside came alive.
"Good evening, Julian."
Samuel's voice carried effortlessly across the estate.
"I apologize for arriving unannounced."
Julian stepped onto the front porch before Marcus could stop him.
"That's close enough."
Samuel chuckled.
"I had a feeling you'd say that."
"You've caused enough damage to my family."
Samuel tilted his head.
"Your family?"
"I haven't even begun."
Marcus quietly whispered from behind Julian,
"He's stalling."
"I know."
Samuel continued speaking.
"You've read Eleanor's journal."
Julian said nothing.
"You've discovered the Foundation."
Still nothing.
Samuel smiled.
"But you still haven't asked the most important question."
Julian finally answered.
"And what's that?"
Samuel's expression became unexpectedly serious.
"Why did Eleanor choose your family?"
Before Julian could respond—
A sharp crack echoed across the estate.
A sniper shot.
One of the mansion's marble columns exploded beside Samuel.
Everyone froze.
The bullet hadn't come from the Hale estate.
It had come from somewhere else.
Samuel's own security team immediately surrounded him.
Another shot rang out.
This time one of Samuel's men collapsed.
Chaos erupted outside.
Samuel looked genuinely surprised.
"What the—"
A third shot shattered the windshield of one of the black SUVs.
Marcus immediately recognized the pattern.
"Those aren't our shooters."
Julian looked at him.
"Then whose?"
Marcus had no answer.
Nearly eight hundred yards away...
Hidden within the hills overlooking the Hale estate...
A lone sniper calmly chambered another round.
She adjusted her scope.
Her breathing remained perfectly steady.
Inside the crosshairs—
Samuel Vance.
She paused.
Then deliberately fired wide.
Not to kill.
To send a message.
Her encrypted radio crackled.
"Status?"
She answered quietly.
"Contact established."
"The wolves found each other."
The voice on the radio replied,
"Excellent."
"Maintain observation."
"No engagement unless absolutely necessary."
She acknowledged the order.
Then disappeared deeper into the hillside.
Back at the mansion...
Samuel slowly looked toward the surrounding hills.
His expression had changed.
For the first time that evening...
He appeared concerned.
He spoke into his hidden microphone.
"Find the shooter."
Immediately.
Dozens of his operatives spread into the darkness.
Julian noticed the change.
"You weren't expecting that."
Samuel looked back toward him.
"No."
A faint smile crossed Julian's face.
"Feels strange not being the one in control, doesn't it?"
Samuel returned the smile.
"You think this helps you?"
"It might."
Samuel laughed softly.
"No."
"It complicates everything."
Inside the house...
One of the security technicians finally restored partial power using an isolated backup generator.
Several interior cameras flickered back online.
The technician suddenly froze.
"Marcus..."
"You need to see this."
Everyone gathered around the monitor.
The footage showed the mansion's east hallway...
Recorded exactly twelve minutes earlier.
Before the blackout.
A man wearing a maintenance uniform calmly walked through the hallway carrying a toolbox.
No one had questioned him.
No one stopped him.
He approached the library.
Placed something beneath the grandfather clock.
Then walked away.
Marcus enlarged the image.
His face hardened.
"I know him."
Julian looked over.
"Who is he?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Former FBI."
"What?"
"He disappeared sixteen years ago."
"He was declared dead."
Julian slowly exhaled.
"Another ghost."
Marcus nodded.
"Seems to be a theme."
Just then—
A small red light beneath the grandfather clock began flashing.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
The same sound they had heard beneath Warehouse 19.
Marcus immediately stepped back.
"No one touch it."
The technician carefully scanned the device.
After several tense seconds, he looked up.
"It's not a bomb."
"What is it?"
"A transmitter."
Marcus frowned.
"For what?"
Before anyone could answer—
A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath the mansion.
The entire floor vibrated.
Books tumbled from shelves.
Crystal glasses shattered.
Julian steadied himself against the wall.
"What was that?"
One of the engineers monitoring the estate's structural sensors looked horrified.
"The underground vault..."
Julian stared.
"What about it?"
The engineer swallowed hard.
"I think..."
"...someone just opened it from below."
Silence.
Julian slowly turned toward his mother.
"Martha..."
"You told me there wasn't another basement."
Her face had gone completely pale.
"There wasn't."
Another rumble shook the mansion.
This time louder.
Heavier.
As though an enormous steel door, sealed for decades...
May you like
...had finally been unlocked.
