Chapter 17: The Man at the Funeral

The underground command center fell into complete silence.

Julian stared at the monitor, searching Evelyn Brooks' face for any sign that she might be mistaken.

There wasn't one.

She looked absolutely certain.

Martha, however, looked as though the blood had drained from her body.

"No..." she whispered again. "It can't be."

Julian turned toward her.

"You know him."

She slowly nodded.

"I've known him for over thirty years."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Who is he?"

Evelyn answered before Martha could speak.

"Richard Caldwell."

The name hung in the air.

Julian frowned.

"Richard Caldwell?"

His father's oldest friend.

The man who had stood beside the Hale family through every major tragedy.

The man who had spoken at Arthur Hale's funeral.

The man Julian had called "Uncle Richard" as a child.

Marcus' expression hardened.

"The retired federal judge?"

Evelyn nodded.

"The same one."

Julian immediately shook his head.

"No."

"That's impossible."

"He helped us expose Beatrice."

"He donated millions to the victims' legal fund."

"He testified on our behalf."

Evelyn looked at him with sympathy.

"Exactly."

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," Evelyn replied quietly, "he was protecting something much bigger than Beatrice."

Martha slowly lowered herself into a chair.

"I should have realized."

Julian looked at her.

"Realized what?"

She closed her eyes.

"The night your father died..."

Marcus immediately looked up.

"You always said it was a heart attack."

Martha nodded.

"That's what the death certificate says."

Julian felt his stomach tighten.

"You mean..."

Martha looked at her son with tears filling her eyes.

"I never believed it."

Twenty-two years earlier...

Arthur Hale had returned home unusually late.

He looked exhausted.

Distracted.

Afraid.

Martha remembered every detail.

"He locked himself in his study."

"He burned several documents."

"He kept saying..."

She stopped.

Julian gently encouraged her.

"Saying what?"

Martha swallowed.

"'They're too powerful.'"

"'No one can stop them.'"

"'If anything happens to me... protect Julian.'"

Marcus quietly asked,

"Did he ever mention names?"

"Only one."

"Richard."

Back in the present...

Julian slowly sat down.

His memories began rearranging themselves.

Richard Caldwell had attended every family holiday.

Every birthday.

Every graduation.

He had comforted Julian after Arthur's death.

He had celebrated Julian's business successes.

He had even testified during Beatrice's sentencing.

If Evelyn was right...

Richard hadn't been protecting the Hale family.

He had been watching them.

Evelyn interrupted his thoughts.

"Julian..."

"You need to leave the command center immediately."

Marcus looked at the monitor.

"Why?"

"The Foundation already knows the elevator exists."

As if to confirm her warning—

The chamber shook violently.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

One of the security monitors displayed fresh movement.

Several armed teams had entered the mansion above.

"They're inside," Marcus said.

Julian immediately stood.

"Can they reach us?"

Evelyn answered honestly.

"Eventually."

"But not through the elevator."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She pointed toward another hallway extending beyond the command center.

"My sister designed three escape routes."

"Samuel knows about one."

"The Foundation knows about another."

Julian asked,

"And the third?"

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Only you know it."

Julian looked confused.

"I've never been here before."

"No."

"But your father brought you."

The room became silent again.

Julian searched his memory.

Nothing.

"I don't remember."

"You were six years old."

Evelyn pressed a few keys.

An old security recording appeared.

The date read:

August 18, 2004.

A young Arthur Hale entered the command center holding six-year-old Julian's hand.

Little Julian laughed as he pointed toward a wall covered with colorful drawings.

Arthur knelt beside him.

"If you ever get lost..."

He smiled warmly.

"...follow the lighthouse."

The recording ended.

Julian stared blankly.

Then something clicked.

"The lighthouse..."

He whispered.

Marcus looked puzzled.

"What lighthouse?"

Julian pointed toward a framed painting hanging on the far wall.

Until now, no one had paid attention to it.

It showed a lonely lighthouse overlooking a stormy sea.

Julian walked toward it.

"I remember this painting."

As a child, he had always thought it was strange that such an ordinary picture hung inside an underground room.

He carefully lifted it from the wall.

Behind it...

A biometric keypad appeared.

Outside the estate...

Samuel Vance watched helicopters circle overhead.

One of his trusted men approached.

"The Foundation assault teams entered three minutes ago."

Samuel looked almost irritated.

"They're early."

"What do we do?"

Samuel watched the mansion quietly.

"We stay out."

The operative looked surprised.

"They'll destroy the archive."

Samuel calmly replied,

"They're not after the archive."

"They're after Julian."

Inside the command center...

Julian placed his hand on the biometric scanner.

The display illuminated immediately.

Identity Confirmed.

Arthur Hale Protocol Activated.

A hidden section of the wall slowly slid open.

Cold air rushed into the room.

Beyond it stretched a narrow tunnel reinforced with steel beams.

Emergency lights flickered to life one by one.

Marcus looked impressed.

"Your father built this?"

Evelyn answered from the monitor.

"He finished it three months before he died."

Julian looked back at the screen.

"Why didn't you ever contact us?"

Evelyn's eyes softened.

"Because Arthur made me promise."

"He believed the Foundation had someone inside every federal agency."

"So we waited."

Marcus quietly asked,

"For what?"

Evelyn looked directly at Julian.

"For you to become the man he believed you would become."

Suddenly—

Every monitor inside the command center switched to the mansion's security cameras.

Masked operatives wearing black combat gear moved room by room.

Disciplined.

Methodical.

They weren't stealing valuables.

They weren't searching randomly.

They already knew exactly where they were going.

One team stopped inside the library.

Another entered the wine cellar.

A third surrounded the elevator hidden behind the wine rack.

Marcus' face tightened.

"They found the entrance."

Evelyn spoke urgently.

"You have less than five minutes."

Julian looked at the tunnel.

"What about you?"

"I'll erase everything."

"The archive?"

"It's already somewhere they can never reach."

Julian hesitated.

"Come with us."

For the first time, Evelyn smiled.

"I can't."

"Someone has to stay behind."

Before Julian could argue—

The video feed flickered.

An alarm echoed throughout the chamber.

VAULT BREACH DETECTED.

The reinforced elevator doors began shaking violently.

Someone outside was using industrial cutting equipment.

Marcus drew his weapon.

"They're coming."

Evelyn looked into the camera one last time.

"Julian..."

"Whatever happens..."

"...don't let Richard Caldwell reach the archive."

The screen went black.

The connection was gone.

Julian stared at the dark monitor for one final second.

Then he turned toward the escape tunnel.

Behind them...

The sound of twisting metal echoed through the command center.

May you like

The vault doors were finally beginning to give way.
