Chapter 13: The Secret Martha Buried

Julian drove through the front gates of the Hale estate just after sunset.

The familiar mansion, once a symbol of peace after months of legal battles, suddenly felt unfamiliar. Every light in the house was on. Two security vehicles sat near the entrance, and Marcus Bennett was already waiting on the front steps.

The moment Julian stepped out of his car, Marcus knew something was wrong.

"She won't tell me anything," Marcus said quietly. "She insisted on waiting for you."

Julian nodded.

"How long has she been like this?"

"Almost two hours."

They entered the house without another word.

Inside, Martha Hale sat alone in the library.

The fire crackled softly in the stone fireplace, but she looked cold despite the warmth filling the room. An old leather photo album rested on the table beside the envelope she had received earlier.

She looked up as Julian entered.

For a long moment, mother and son simply stared at one another.

Finally, Martha spoke.

"Lock the door."

Marcus did.

She waited until she heard the lock click before taking a slow breath.

"I've spent twenty-eight years convincing myself that I was protecting you."

Julian sat across from her.

"Protecting me from what?"

Martha looked at the photograph again.

"From the truth."

She slowly opened the faded photo album.

Most of the photographs had begun to yellow with age.

Business dinners.

Holiday parties.

Courtroom ceremonies.

Chicago.

The late 1980s.

Martha stopped at one photograph.

Three young women stood outside the Cook County Courthouse.

Julian immediately recognized two of them.

A younger Martha.

A younger Beatrice Vance.

The third woman smiled brightly, her arm wrapped around Martha's shoulder.

She looked no older than twenty-five.

"Who's she?"

Martha swallowed.

"Her name was Eleanor Brooks."

Julian frowned.

"I've never heard you mention her."

"You weren't supposed to."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Eleanor Brooks..."

The name sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

Then it hit him.

He quickly pulled out his tablet and searched through archived investigation files.

His eyes widened.

"Oh, my God."

Julian looked over.

"What?"

Marcus slowly turned the screen.

"Eleanor Brooks..."

"...was Hannah Brooks' mother."

Silence filled the room.

Julian looked back at Martha.

"The same Hannah Brooks who testified against Beatrice?"

Martha nodded.

"Yes."

Julian felt the room shift beneath him.

"You're telling me Hannah's family was connected to the Vances all along?"

"Not just connected."

Martha closed her eyes.

"They were part of everything."

Chicago.

Martha's voice carried them back through time.

"We were inseparable."

She pointed to the photograph.

"Me."

"Beatrice."

"Eleanor."

"We were all young attorneys working for the same law firm."

Julian listened carefully.

"At first, we believed we were helping people."

"But our senior partners represented organized crime."

"The Vance family."

Martha's hands trembled.

"We didn't realize it until it was too late."

Beatrice embraced it.

Eleanor wanted to expose it.

Martha simply wanted to escape.

Then one night...

Everything changed.

"It was December 14."

"I remember because it was snowing."

Eleanor called an emergency meeting.

She had evidence.

Financial records.

Witness statements.

Bank transfers.

Enough to destroy the entire Vance organization.

"We agreed to meet after work."

"But Beatrice never came."

Julian already knew why.

"She betrayed you."

Martha nodded slowly.

"She had been working with Samuel for months."

"Eleanor never made it to the meeting."

Marcus quietly asked,

"What happened to her?"

Martha stared into the fire.

"They said she died in a car accident."

"But there was no funeral."

"No body."

"Nothing."

Julian slowly pieced the puzzle together.

"Hannah believed her mother died."

"So did everyone else."

"Yes."

Martha whispered.

"Except me."

She reached beneath the table.

From a locked wooden box, she removed an old cassette tape.

Its label had nearly faded away.

Only one handwritten date remained.

December 13, 1988.

"The day before Eleanor disappeared."

Julian stared.

"You kept this all these years?"

"I couldn't bring myself to destroy it."

Marcus immediately found an old cassette player from one of the library cabinets.

After a moment...

The tape began to play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's frightened voice emerged.

"Martha..."

"If you're hearing this..."

"...I probably ran out of time."

Julian's heartbeat quickened.

Eleanor.

"I found something much bigger than Samuel Vance."

"There are people above him."

"They call themselves..."

The recording suddenly distorted.

Loud static interrupted every word.

Then—

"...Foundation..."

"...inside government..."

"...they own..."

More static.

Then Eleanor's voice returned.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Protect Hannah."

"Promise me."

The tape abruptly ended.

Silence.

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Marcus finally broke the silence.

"The Foundation."

Julian nodded.

"Samuel mentioned it."

Martha looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Julian explained everything that had happened in Chicago.

The hidden bunker.

The video.

Samuel's message.

The Foundation.

Martha's expression slowly changed from confusion...

...to fear.

"No..."

She whispered.

"They're still alive."

Marcus frowned.

"You know them?"

"I've never met them."

"But Eleanor did."

"She believed they weren't a criminal organization."

"They were something worse."

Julian asked quietly,

"What?"

Martha looked directly into his eyes.

"A network."

"Judges."

"Federal officials."

"Billionaires."

"Corporate executives."

"People whose names never appear together."

"But who quietly decide who rises..."

"...and who disappears."

Just then—

The estate's security system suddenly activated.

Every monitor in the library switched on simultaneously.

One by one.

Twenty-seven screens.

Every camera around the property.

Driveway.

Pool.

Gardens.

Garage.

Helipad.

Everything.

Then each screen turned black.

A single symbol slowly appeared.

A silver circle surrounding a black key.

Marcus immediately stood.

"I've never seen that logo."

Martha had.

She gasped.

"Eleanor drew that symbol..."

"...the week before she vanished."

A computerized voice filled every speaker throughout the house.

"Good evening, Mrs. Hale."

Julian immediately moved in front of his mother.

"Who's there?"

The calm voice ignored him.

"We've waited thirty years."

"You have something that belongs to us."

Marcus reached for his phone.

No signal.

Every communication line had been cut.

The voice continued.

"You have exactly forty-eight hours."

"Return the Brooks Archive."

"Or the Hale family ends."

The screens flickered once.

Then returned to normal.

The security system rebooted.

Outside...

Nothing appeared unusual.

No vehicles.

No intruders.

No movement.

Only silence.

Julian slowly turned toward Martha.

"What is the Brooks Archive?"

Martha looked completely stunned.

"I don't know."

Then she stopped.

A forgotten memory surfaced.

Her eyes widened.

"Oh, God..."

Julian stepped closer.

"What?"

Martha whispered only four words.

"Eleanor gave me something."

She looked toward the attic.

May you like

"I never opened it."
