Chapter 10: The Resolution

Chapter 10: The Resolution
Six months later, the California sun shone brightly over the infinity pool at the Hale estate. The air smelled of blooming jasmine and fresh coffee.
Julian sat at the patio table, reviewing a quarterly earnings report on his tablet. He looked up at the sound of light footsteps. Martha was walking out onto the deck, carrying a tray with a pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. She looked healthier than she had in years. The stress lines had faded, and her natural, sharp wit had fully returned.
"You're working too hard on a Sunday, Julian," she scolded playfully, setting a glass down next to his tablet.
"Just finishing up, Mom," he smiled, closing the screen.
The trial had been swift and brutal. Facing mountains of evidence from Los Angeles and the reopened Chicago case, Beatrice Vance had accepted a plea deal. She was currently serving a thirty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal facility. The media had finally moved on to the next scandal, leaving the Hale family in peace.
"Marcus called this morning," Martha mentioned casually, taking a sip of her lemonade. "He said the final injunction against the tabloids went through. We're officially off the radar."
"Good," Julian said, leaning back in his chair and taking a deep breath of the clean air. "We've had enough drama to last a lifetime."
"So," Martha said, a familiar, teasing glint in her eye. "Now that the dust has settled... when are you going to ask that lovely lead investigator from Marcus's firm out to dinner? The one who found all the Chicago files. She's smart, Julian. And she certainly wouldn't put up with any nonsense."

Julian laughed, a genuine, warm sound that echoed across the water. For the first time in a long time, the sprawling estate didn't feel like a fortress or a battleground. It felt like a home.
"Maybe next week, Mom," Julian smiled, watching the water ripple in the pool. "Maybe next week."
