Chapter 16: The Vault Beneath the Estate

The second tremor was stronger than the first.

Books crashed from the library shelves. Crystal shattered across the marble floor, and the chandelier above the foyer swayed violently before settling into an uneasy silence.

Everyone froze.

Julian looked toward the polished hardwood beneath his feet.

The vibration hadn't come from outside.

It had come from directly below the mansion.

Marcus drew a slow breath.

"There really is something under this house."

Martha looked as though the world had slipped out from beneath her.

"I swear to you..."

"I never knew."

Julian believed her.

If she had spent nearly three decades protecting Eleanor's secrets without opening the cedar trunk, she wasn't the kind of woman who would secretly build an underground vault.

Which meant someone else had.

Outside...

Samuel Vance stood perfectly still, his attention no longer fixed on the mansion.

Instead, he stared toward the west wing.

One of his operatives approached.

"Sir."

"The seismic sensors confirm movement beneath the estate."

Samuel's expression remained unreadable.

"So..."

"It still exists."

The operative hesitated.

"Should we proceed with the extraction?"

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Someone else already opened it."

The man frowned.

"Someone inside?"

Samuel looked toward the dark hillside where the mysterious sniper had fired earlier.

"No."

"Someone we've never met."

Inside the mansion...

Marcus immediately ordered a structural scan of the property.

Within minutes, the estate's architectural blueprints appeared on a tablet.

Julian studied them carefully.

"The original construction ended here."

He pointed toward the foundation.

"There shouldn't be anything underneath."

One of the engineers zoomed in.

"There isn't."

Julian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The official blueprints don't show it."

Marcus quietly added,

"But ground-penetrating radar does."

Everyone looked at the display.

Beneath the western half of the mansion...

Hidden nearly sixty feet underground...

Was a massive circular chamber.

No records.

No permits.

No access tunnels.

Nothing.

It was as though someone had buried an entire structure beneath the estate and erased every trace of its existence.

"There's only one way in."

The engineer pointed toward a narrow anomaly beneath the wine cellar.

Marcus looked at Julian.

"You ready?"

Julian nodded.

"I've been asking questions for months."

"It's time we finally get some answers."

The wine cellar was silent.

Rows of expensive bottles lined the stone walls, undisturbed for years.

Marcus walked slowly between the shelves, comparing the radar image to the room itself.

"There."

Near the back wall stood an enormous oak wine rack.

Unlike the others...

It wasn't anchored to the floor.

Julian placed both hands against it.

"Help me."

Together they pushed.

The rack rolled sideways with surprising ease.

Behind it...

A steel door emerged from the stone wall.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Julian stared.

"That's impossible."

Marcus agreed.

"This technology wasn't around when this house was built."

Martha slowly approached.

Then something unexpected happened.

The scanner illuminated.

A calm electronic voice spoke.

Identity required.

Everyone remained silent.

Julian looked at Marcus.

"Any ideas?"

Marcus shrugged.

"Worth trying."

He placed his thumb on the scanner.

Access denied.

One of the security officers tried.

Denied.

Another.

Denied.

Martha hesitated before placing her hand against the glass.

Nothing.

Then...

Julian touched the scanner.

A green light flashed.

Identity confirmed.

Welcome, Julian Hale.

Heavy locking bolts echoed inside the wall.

The steel door slowly swung inward.

No one spoke.

Marcus finally broke the silence.

"Eleanor wasn't kidding."

A narrow elevator waited beyond the doorway.

Its interior looked surprisingly modern.

Brushed steel.

Touchscreen controls.

Emergency power.

Everything appeared to have been maintained.

For decades.

Julian examined the control panel.

Only one button existed.

LEVEL -1

He pressed it.

The doors closed silently.

The elevator began descending.

Thirty feet.

Forty.

Fifty.

Finally—

It stopped.

The doors opened.

Every person inside instinctively stepped back.

The chamber before them looked nothing like they had imagined.

It wasn't a bunker.

It wasn't a storage vault.

It was a command center.

Dozens of computer workstations surrounded a circular room.

Massive servers hummed quietly behind reinforced glass.

Digital displays covered one wall from floor to ceiling.

Even more astonishing...

The equipment was still running.

Someone had been maintaining the facility.

Recently.

Marcus whispered,

"This place has power."

Julian slowly walked toward the center console.

Dust covered almost nothing.

Coffee sat inside a ceramic mug.

Still warm.

His heartbeat quickened.

"We're not alone."

A woman's voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"I was beginning to wonder when you'd arrive."

Everyone spun toward the sound.

A large monitor flickered to life.

A woman appeared on the screen.

Mid-forties.

Dark hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

Professional.

Composed.

Julian had never seen her before.

Neither had Marcus.

She smiled politely.

"My name is Evelyn Brooks."

Silence.

Martha gasped.

"Brooks?"

The woman nodded.

"Yes."

"Eleanor Brooks was my older sister."

Julian's eyes widened.

"Hannah never mentioned you."

Evelyn's smile faded.

"Hannah doesn't know I exist."

Marcus stepped closer to the screen.

"Where are you?"

"Safe."

"That's all you need to know."

Julian interrupted.

"You've been watching us."

"For years."

"Correct."

"You built this?"

"My sister did."

"With some assistance."

Julian glanced around the room.

"This place has been operating for decades."

Evelyn nodded.

"It has."

Marcus asked the obvious question.

"What is this facility?"

Evelyn became serious.

"It isn't a bunker."

"It isn't even an archive."

She looked directly into Julian's eyes.

"It's the insurance policy."

Before anyone could ask another question...

Every monitor suddenly flashed red.

A warning siren echoed through the underground chamber.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

PERIMETER BREACH.

Evelyn's expression changed instantly.

"They found you."

Julian looked up.

"Samuel?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"Worse."

"The Foundation."

Marcus frowned.

"Aren't they the same thing?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Samuel works for them."

"He always has."

The room fell silent.

Everything Julian believed over the past six months suddenly shifted.

Beatrice had never been the mastermind.

Neither was Samuel.

They had both answered to someone else.

One of the monitors automatically switched to the estate's exterior security cameras.

Black helicopters appeared over the property.

Not one.

Three.

They carried no government markings.

No registration numbers.

No lights.

Only the silver emblem of a circle surrounding a black key.

The Foundation had arrived.

Evelyn looked straight into the camera.

"You have less than ten minutes."

Julian tightened his grip on the edge of the console.

"Tell me who runs the Foundation."

Evelyn hesitated.

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

Then she spoke a name that caused Martha to stumble backward in disbelief.

"No..."

Martha whispered.

"That's impossible."

Because the man Evelyn had just identified...

May you like

...had attended Julian's father's funeral.
