Chapter 9: The Arrest

Bianca lunged forward, eyes wild, grabbing a heavy brass shoehorn from the valet stand. "I'll kill you!" she shrieked, swinging the metal blindly toward Julian's head.

Julian easily caught her wrist mid-swing, twisting it just enough to force her to drop the makeshift weapon. It clattered noisily against the hardwood floor. He shoved her backward, and she collapsed against the shelves, panting and defeated.

"You really don't know when to quit, do you?" Julian said, his voice laced with pity.

Red and blue flashing lights suddenly illuminated the bedroom windows, casting eerie shadows across the walls. The wail of police sirens pierced the sound of the falling rain.

"You're a monster," Bianca spat, tears of pure rage streaming down her face.

"No," Julian corrected her, stepping back as heavy footsteps echoed up the main staircase. "I'm just a son protecting his mother. You're the monster. And you're finally out of shadows."

Four armed police officers entered the master suite, weapons drawn. "Julian Hale?" the lead officer asked.

"That's me, officer," Julian nodded, gesturing toward Bianca. "There's the woman you're looking for. Beatrice Vance. Wanted in Chicago, and caught here red-handed breaking and entering."

The officers hauled Bianca to her feet, roughly cuffing her hands behind her back. She didn't say another word. The fight had finally left her. She stared blankly at the floor as they read her the Miranda rights and marched her out of the mansion, into the pouring rain, and into the back of a squad car.

Julian stood by the window, watching the tail lights fade down the long driveway. It was finally over.
