Chapter 10 - Blood and Ice

"Run!" Rachel screamed to herself as her boots slammed down the metal steps of the exterior fire escape.

Behind her, the second henchman smashed through the wooden door, bursting out into the cold rain. He pulled a silenced pistol from his coat, aiming straight down at her.

PFFT! PFFT!

Two suppressed gunshots whizzed past Rachel's head, shattering the brick wall beside her into dust.

Rachel hit the muddy ground, scrambling to her feet, clutching the steel box against her chest. She sprinted through the dense fog toward the station wagon.

Suddenly, a blinding pair of headlights cut through the gloom.

A heavy high-end SUV tore down the gravel driveway, spinning its tires in the mud before sliding to an abrupt stop, blocking the carriage house exit.

The driver’s door flew open.

Adrian Westwood stepped out into the rain, holding a heavy iron tire iron he had grabbed from his trunk, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Rachel! Get behind me!" Adrian roared.

The henchman holding the gun slammed down the fire escape stairs, leveling his weapon directly at Adrian. "Move out of the way, Westwood, or you join your dead wife!"

Before the shooter could pull the trigger, the driver-side door of a second vehicle—a black police cruiser—swung open right behind Adrian’s SUV.

BANG!

A single rifle shot echoed through the trees.

The henchman’s gun flew out of his shattered hand, and he collapsed onto the muddy grass, screaming in agony as blood seeped through his coat.

Detective Frank Vance stepped out from behind the cruiser, his tactical sniper rifle resting against his shoulder, smoke wafting from the barrel.

"Chicago PD!" Vance shouted, as four more police cars swarmed the long driveway, sirens blaring, red and blue lights flashing wildly against the misty woods. "Drop your weapons! Hands where I can see them!"

The second henchman inside the carriage house threw his hands up immediately, dropping his fuel can and stepping out with his palms raised.

Adrian ignored the police commotion. He sprinted past the officers straight to Rachel, who was kneeling in the mud, panting heavily, holding the metal box like a shield.

"Rachel! Are you hurt?!" Adrian asked, dropping to his knees beside her, grabbing her shoulders.

"I'm fine... I'm fine," Rachel sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the mud on her cheeks. "Emma... check on Emma!"

Adrian turned toward the station wagon. Little Emma was looking through the glass window, clutching her rabbit, unhurt and safe.

Adrian let out a deep, shuddering breath, pulling Rachel into a tight, protective embrace. "She's safe. You saved us, Rachel. You saved all of us."

Rachel closed her eyes, resting her head against Adrian’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart.

She held out the rusted iron box. "This is Claire's final truth."

Adrian took the box. He opened the heavy lid. Inside sat the original financial ledger signed in Harrison Croft’s handwriting, along with a personal journal entry written in Claire’s elegant cursive.

Adrian flipped to the last page of his late wife's journal.

'If you are reading this, my sweet Adrian... know that I fought until my very last breath to protect our legacy. Do not spend your life trapped in grief. Build something real. Love again. Live again.'

The rain slowly stopped.

The sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Lake Michigan, casting brilliant golden rays across the estate grounds.

Adrian looked up at the sky, feeling a heavy weight—a three-year burden of guilt, doubt, and grief—finally lift from his shoulders.

He looked down at Rachel, then over at little Emma, who was stepping out of the car and running toward them with her arms open wide.
