Chapter 11 - The New Hierarchy

Three months after the night the truth shattered the Westwood estate, the autumn frost gave way to a cold Chicago winter.
The scandal had shaken the financial capital to its core. Harrison Croft sat in a federal detention center without bail. Caleb Westwood’s legal team was frantically trying to negotiate a plea deal for conspiracy, while Madison Cole’s high-priced lawyers fought a losing battle against a mountain of forensically verified evidence.
At Westwood Enterprises, the transformation was total.
In the high-ceilinged corner office on the 50th floor, Adrian stood behind his desk, reviewing the final restructuring papers. Beside him sat Rachel Bennett, dressed in an elegant charcoal business suit, reviewing the operational budget for the newly reorganized Claire Westwood Foundation.
"You're approving a twelve-million-dollar expansion for the children's shelter program?" Rachel asked, raising her eyes from the tablet. "Adrian, the board is still recovering from the financial audit."
"The board does what I tell them to do now," Adrian replied, his voice firm yet devoid of the cold anger that used to define him. "Besides, you're the Director of the Foundation now, Rachel. If you say the shelter needs the funds, the funds are released."
A soft knock interrupted them. Marcus Sterling, Adrian’s personal attorney, walked in carrying a leather briefcase. His face was grim.
"Adrian, we have a problem regarding Margaret," Marcus said directly.
Adrian’s expression tightened. "My mother has been removed from all trust accounts and board advisories. What else is there?"
"She’s holding a press conference at the Drake Hotel at 2:00 PM," Marcus explained, pulling out a motion document. "She’s hired a public relations firm to claim that you were 'emotionally compromised' by grief, and that you manipulated Caleb’s confession while he was under severe psychological distress. She's filing for emergency conservatorship over your voting shares."
Rachel gasped softly. "She’s willing to destroy her own son to save Caleb?"
"She isn't trying to save Caleb," Adrian said quietly, staring out at the snow falling over the city skyline. "She's trying to save herself. If Caleb takes a full plea deal, he will implicate her in the original offshore transfers that funded her private real estate portfolio in Miami."
"What are your orders?" Marcus asked.
Adrian turned around, his eyes piercing. "Release the secondary audit logs we found in the carriage house box to the Federal Prosecutor. Let Mother know that if she steps onto that stage at the Drake Hotel today, her name will be added to the federal indictment before she finishes her opening statement."
Marcus nodded once. "Understood."
As the attorney exited, Rachel stepped closer to Adrian. "She's your mother, Adrian. Is there really nothing left between you two?"
"The woman I thought was my mother died the day she chose profit and reputation over Claire's life," Adrian said softly. He looked down at Rachel, his eyes softening completely. "How is Emma enjoying her new school?"

Rachel smiled, a warm light filling her face. "She loves it. But she still insists on bringing her stuffed rabbit to class every single day."
"Good," Adrian smiled faintly. "Because that rabbit saved my life."
