Chapter 17 - Forgiveness from a Distance

Two weeks later, Adrian stood in the visitor reception room of the State Penitentiary outside Joliet, Illinois.

On the other side of a reinforced glass panel sat Caleb Westwood. His signature styled hair was shaved close to the scalp, his expensive designer clothes replaced by a coarse denim inmate uniform. The arrogance that had characterized his youth had been thoroughly crushed out of him.

Caleb picked up the black telephone handset with trembling fingers.

Adrian picked up his side.

"You actually came," Caleb murmured, his voice sounding thin through the plastic speaker.

"I came because you sent four letters," Adrian said neutrally. "What do you want, Caleb?"

Caleb looked down at his calloused hands. Tears welled up in his tired eyes. "I wanted to tell you... I pleaded guilty yesterday. No trial. No appeals. I accepted the fifteen-year sentence."

Adrian stayed silent, listening.

"I know I don't deserve your forgiveness," Caleb choked out, pressing his forehead against the glass. "When Madison came to me with the plan... I was terrified of going to prison for the gambling debts. I was a coward, Adrian. I let her do it. I let her hurt Claire. Every single night in this cell, I hear Claire's voice from that audio file."

"Good," Adrian said softly. "You should hear it. It's the cost of your soul."

Caleb sobbed quietly, nodding his head. "I don't expect you to ever write back or visit again. But I needed you to know... I told the prosecutors everything about Mother's offshore accounts. I stopped covering for her. I wanted to do one right thing before I rot in here."

Adrian stared at his younger brother. A faint trace of grief touched his chest—not for the criminal sitting across from him, but for the boy Caleb used to be before greed and toxic family pride consumed him.

"You have fifteen years to become a real man, Caleb," Adrian said, his voice steady. "I won't visit you again. I won't pay for high-priced appeals. But if you serve your time, make genuine amends, and seek redemption... maybe when you get out, we can talk as strangers."

Caleb wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve and gave a tight, appreciative nod. "Thank you, Adrian. Take... take care of Rachel and the little girl."

Adrian gently hung up the phone. He stood up, adjusted his coat, and walked toward the heavy steel doors leading back to the outside world.

As the daylight hit his face, Adrian felt the very last thread of his dark past snap cleanly away.
