Chapter 3 - The Ghost's Voice

Inside the safe lay three items: a thick black leather notebook, a black velvet pouch containing Claire's grandmother’s emerald ring, and a sleek, silver USB flash drive attached to a blue lanyard.

Adrian reached in and pulled out the USB drive.

His hand shook. The metal was cold against his palm.

"Adrian, don't do this," Madison whispered. She had stopped playing the offended victim. Her face was pale, her lips trembling, her posture slumping as if all the air had been sucked out of her. "Whatever is on there... it's old. It's from a time when Claire was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly..."

"Sick?" Natalie spat. "Claire wasn't sick, Madison. She was terrified. Of you."

Adrian didn't say another word. He walked over to Claire’s vanity desk, opened his suit jacket, and pulled out his personal smartphone and a small portable media hub adapter he always carried for work.

He plugged the USB drive into the adapter and connected it to his phone.

The screen lit up. A single folder appeared: IF_SOMETHING_HAPPENS_TO_ME.

Inside the folder was a single audio file dated October 14th—the exact night Claire died. The timestamp was 11:14 PM.

Forty-six minutes before her car plunged into the ravine.

Adrian hit play. He turned the volume to maximum.

The room held its breath.

Then, through the speaker of Adrian's phone, Claire’s voice filled the high-ceilinged dressing room. It was slightly distorted by rain static, but unmistakable.

"Adrian... if you're listening to this, it means I was right. It means I didn't make it home tonight."

Margaret covered her mouth, a sharp sob escaping her throat.

"I'm driving down Route 9 right now. The rain is heavy, and my steering... my steering feels wrong. The traction control light keeps flashing, but I didn't turn it off. Adrian, listen to me carefully."

Claire’s voice on the recording trembled, pausing as the sound of heavy rain lashed against her windshield.

"I went to the office tonight to drop off the quarterly audit. I found Madison in your private server room. She didn't see me. She was downloading the offshore transfer logs for Westwood Logistics. When I confronted her in the lobby, she threatened me. She said if I told you, she would ruin the family. She said Caleb was helping her."

Caleb’s face went completely ghost-white. "That’s... that’s a forgery! You can AI-generate voices now! That's not real!"

"Shut him up!" Adrian growled without taking his eyes off his phone.

"I tried to drive straight to the police station," Claire’s recorded voice continued, growing more frantic. "But my brakes... oh God, Adrian, the pedal is going straight to the floor! I can't stop! The car won't stop! Madison was at the country club garage while I was inside... she did something to the—"

SCREECH—

A terrible, agonizing sound of tearing metal and shattering glass blasted from the phone speaker, followed by absolute, sickening silence.

Then the recording ended.

The dressing room felt as quiet as a tomb.

Adrian stood frozen. The blood in his veins seemed to turn into pure ice. For three years, he had lived with the agonizing guilt that his wife had died in a tragic, dark accident while he was away on a business trip in California.

For three years, he had let his mother convince him to heal.

For three years, he had let Madison Cole creep into his life, soothe his grief, sit at his dinner table, sleep in his bed, and wear his family’s pride.

And all the while, she had murdered his wife.

Adrian slowly looked up from his phone. His eyes were devoid of grief now. There was only an ancient, terrifying wrath.

"You," Adrian whispered.

Madison backed up until her spine hit the mahogany doorway. "Adrian... please... she was lying! She was jealous of us! She knew we had a history before you married her—"

"You tampered with her brakes," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped toward her. "You let her crash into a ravine. And then you walked into my life, acted like my savior, and waited for three years until you were safe enough to hunt down the proof she left behind."

"I didn't!" Madison screamed, breaking down completely, her sleek facade shattering into hysterical sobbing. "It was Caleb! Caleb needed the money to pay off his gambling debts in Macau! He told me to do it! He said if we got rid of Claire, we could control the board!"

"You crazy bitch!" Caleb yelled, rushing forward to grab Madison. "You're throwing me under the bus?!"

"Enough!"

A loud BANG echoed down the corridor.

Everyone froze.

Standing in the doorway of the dressing room was Detective Frank Vance—a family friend and senior homicide investigator for the Chicago PD—who had been downstairs attending the engagement party as a guest.

Behind him were two uniformed police officers.

"I came up to see what the commotion was," Detective Vance said, his face grim, holding a silver pair of handcuffs in his hand. "Looks like I picked the right night to wear a suit."
