Chapter 7 - Poison in the Bloodline

At 8:30 AM, Detective Frank Vance sat across from Madison Cole in an interrogation room at Cook County Jail.

Madison had swapped her gold gown for a coarse orange jumpsuit. Her hair was unwashed, her makeup smeared, but her eyes held the wild, feral desperation of a trapped predator.

"I want immunity," Madison spat, slamming her cuffed hands against the metal table. "I won't take the rap for murder two while Harrison Croft sits in his high-rise office!"

Vance leaned back, folding his arms. "You cut the brake line on Claire Westwood's Mercedes, Madison. You walked into her home three years later to hunt for evidence. You don't get immunity."

"I didn't cut the line!" Madison shrieked. "Caleb bought the mechanic! I just made sure Claire left the country club alone that night!"

The door to the interrogation room clicked open.

Adrian walked in, accompanied by his corporate attorney, Marcus Sterling.

Madison gasped, pushing herself up from her chair before the guard shoved her back down. "Adrian! Adrian, please! You have to listen to me! Croft forced me into this! He had photos of my family—he was going to ruin me!"

Adrian stood at the edge of the table, looking down at her as if she were a stain on the floor.

"Where is the secondary ledger, Madison?" Adrian asked quietly.

Madison’s mouth snapped shut. She blinked, panic flaring in her bloodshot eyes. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."

"Harrison Croft called me an hour ago," Adrian said. "He thinks he controls the board. But Claire’s voice recording was recorded on an encrypted thumb drive. She made two copies, Madison. Where is the second one?"

Madison let out a raspy, bitter laugh. Tears streamed down her hollow cheeks. "You really don't get it, do you? You think this was all about money? About offshore accounts?"

She leaned forward, her voice dropping into a raspy venom.

"Claire didn't just call you the night she died, Adrian. She called your mother. She told Margaret that Caleb was stealing. And do you know what your precious mother did?"

Adrian felt his throat tighten. "What did she do?"

"Margaret called Harrison Croft," Madison sneered, a sick, cruel smile stretching across her face. "Margaret sacrificed Claire to protect her precious family name! She knew Croft was going to handle it! She let your wife die, Adrian! Your entire family is a pit of vipers!"

The silence in the interrogation room was suffocating.

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, placing a hand on Adrian's arm. "Adrian, we need to leave. The board meeting starts in ten minutes."

Adrian didn't break eye contact with Madison. "Where is the second ledger?"

Madison leaned back, her smile fading into a hollow, dead stare. "Check your late father's estate in Lake Forest. The old carriage house. Claire hid a physical lockbox there the afternoon before she died. But you'd better hurry, Adrian..."

Madison glanced at the clock on the wall.

"Croft’s men are already on their way there to burn it down."
