Chapter 13 - Shadows in the Night

Despite the triumph in court, the shadows of the past refused to vanish without a fight.
That evening, at 9:00 PM, Adrian returned to his primary penthouse suite in downtown Chicago. For safety reasons, Rachel and Emma had been staying in the secure residential wing of the estate under 24-hour private security.
Adrian walked down the hallway toward the library, carrying a folder of trial updates. As he passed Emma's bedroom, he saw a warm light spilling through the half-open door.
Rachel was sitting on the edge of the bed, softly reading a bedtime story while Emma drifted off to sleep, her tiny hands clutching her rabbit.
Adrian stood in the doorway, watching the scene. A profound sense of peace—something he hadn't felt in over three years—washed over his heart.
Rachel noticed him and gently slipped out of the room, quietly closing the door behind her.
"Is she sleeping?" Adrian asked quietly.
"Finally," Rachel whispered with a tired smile. "She spent the whole afternoon drawing pictures of the new foundation playground."
Suddenly, Adrian’s head security officer, Mark, walked swiftly down the corridor, his face grim. He held a secure tablet in his hand.
"Mr. Westwood, we have a security breach at the Lake Forest property," Mark reported quietly.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Explain."
"Ten minutes ago, a fire was deliberately set at the primary security gatehouse in Lake Forest," Mark said, pulling up live feed footage. "It was a distraction. While local fire crews responded, a black sedan sped past the perimeter. We intercepted the vehicle at the main driveway."
"Who was inside?" Rachel asked, her hand instinctively moving to her chest.
"Two associates linked to Harrison Croft’s former offshore security firm," Mark replied. "They were carrying silenced firearms and encrypted cell phones. One of the phones had a single text message sent fifteen minutes ago."
Mark showed the screen to Adrian.
'Eliminate the maid and the child before her second courtroom testimony tomorrow. Ten million wire cleared.'
Rachel took a step back, her breath catching in her throat.
Adrian’s face turned into a mask of pure, terrifying wrath. Harrison Croft was trying to execute a hit from inside his federal detention cell.
"Mark," Adrian commanded, his voice trembling with controlled fury. "Double the guard detail on this floor immediately. Contact Detective Vance. Tell him Croft just earned himself a transfer to a maximum-security supermax facility."
"Understood, sir," Mark said, turning swiftly to execute the orders.
Adrian turned to Rachel. She was shaking, her composure finally cracking under the terrifying realization that her daughter was still in danger.
"Rachel," Adrian said softly, reaching out and gently taking both of her shaking hands into his own strong palms. "Look at me."
Rachel looked up, tears brimming in her eyes.

"I swear to you on my life," Adrian said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Nothing will ever happen to you or Emma. I will burn every resource, every dollar, and every ally I have to protect you both. You are safe here."
Rachel looked into his dark, resolute eyes and felt the trembling in her chest slowly stop. In that moment, surrounded by threats and high-society chaos, she knew she trusted Adrian Westwood with her life.
