Chapter 6 - The Morning After the StormBy 6:00 AM, the Chicago sky was the color of bruised steel. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Westwood Tower, mirroring the chaos unfolding across every news channel in the country.

"BOMBSHELL AT THE WESTWOOD MANSION: SOCIALITE MADISON COLE AND HEIR CALEB WESTWOOD ARRESTED IN HOMICIDE CONSPIRACY."

The ticker at the bottom of the screen flickered in bold red. Images of Madison being led away in handcuffs, her silk engagement gown ruined, dominated every tabloid cover from New York to Los Angeles.

Inside the penthouse suite of Westwood Enterprises, Adrian stood by his desk. He hadn't slept a second. He hadn't changed out of his tuxedo shirt, though his tie was thrown onto the couch and his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows.

A soft knock came at his office door.

Rachel Bennett stepped inside, carrying a tray with a mug of fresh black coffee. Beside her walked little Emma, her small hand firmly wrapped around her mother’s fingers.

"Mr. Westwood," Rachel said softly, her voice filled with quiet concern. "You haven't answered your personal phone all morning. I brought you something warm."

Adrian turned around. The dark circles under his eyes looked carved into his skin, but his posture was straight, his jaw rigid.

"Thank you, Rachel," Adrian said, taking the coffee. He looked down at Emma and knelt, matching her eye level just as he had the night before. "How are you doing, little one?"

Emma gave him a timid smile, hugging her stuffed rabbit with one arm. "Mommy said we're staying in the big house now. Is the bad lady ever coming back?"

"Never," Adrian said, his tone resolute. "I give you my word."

He stood up and looked at Rachel. "The board of directors is convening an emergency meeting downstairs in thirty minutes. They’re going to try to force me out. They think the scandal makes me unstable."

Rachel hesitated, then reached into her handbag. "Before you go down there... you need to see this. I went back to the estate early this morning to help clear out the grand ballroom. While I was packing away the coat check room, I found this tucked inside Madison’s fur coat."

She handed Adrian a small black leather address book with gold-embossed initials on the cover: H.C.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Harrison Croft."

Harrison Croft was the Vice Chairman of Westwood Enterprises and Adrian’s late father’s oldest business partner. He was a ruthless corporate raider who had controlled forty percent of the company’s voting shares since the elder Westwood passed away.

Adrian opened the book. Inside were dates, dollar amounts totaling over thirty million dollars, and bank routing numbers tied to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

The last entry was dated three days before Claire's death:

'C.W. refused to take the payoff. M.C. handling the problem. Remainder paid upon clearance.'

Adrian felt a cold tremor run down his spine.

"Claire didn't just stumble onto Caleb's gambling debts," Adrian whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "She found Croft’s master embezzlement scheme. Caleb was just the idiot pawn they used to open the shell accounts."

Suddenly, Adrian’s phone buzzed on the desk. An unknown number flashed on the screen.

He answered, placing it on speaker. "Westwood."

"Adrian, my boy," a smooth, gravelly voice rasped through the speaker. Harrison Croft. "I assume you’ve seen the morning papers. Terrible tragedy. Truly devastating."

"Save it, Harrison," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "I know."

A heavy pause lingered on the line.

"You know nothing, Adrian," Harrison said, his tone shifting from fake sympathy to ice-cold menace. "You’re emotional. Grief has clouded your judgment for three years. If you go into that boardroom today and try to play the hero, the company stock will drop forty percent by noon. Thousands of people will lose their jobs."

"Is that a threat?"

"It’s a corporate reality," Harrison replied softly. "Resign as CEO today. Hand over executive authority to me until this 'unfortunate murder investigation' blows over. Otherwise... well, your late wife wasn't the only person in Chicago who knew how to go for a night drive."

The line went dead.

Adrian slowly looked up at Rachel. Rachel’s face was pale, but her eyes burned with sudden outrage.

May you like

"He's threatening you," she whispered.

"No," Adrian said, tossing the leather address book into his inner jacket pocket. "He's admitting his guilt."
