Chapter 10: Ashes

Chapter 10: Ashes
Richard Harrington sat hunched over in a bleak, concrete interrogation room at the downtown FBI field office, staring down with hollow, dead eyes at the single piece of medical paper his defense counsel had just slid across the metal table.
Patient: Vanessa Kensington. Procedure Completed.
She had never been pregnant with his child. It was all a cold, calculated con—a brilliant, manipulative grift designed to secure her social and financial position as the new Mrs. Harrington while bleeding his empire dry behind closed doors. He had willingly destroyed his six-year marriage, alienated his entire family, bankrupted his multi-million-dollar development company, and traded his entire freedom for a woman who viewed him merely as an ATM machine.
The psychological dam inside Richard completely collapsed. He buried his face deep within his calloused, trembling hands and broke down, emitting a loud, ugly, pathetic sound of absolute despair that echoed harshly off the bare cinderblock walls. He had lost everything—his wealth, his status, his honor, and his family—and he had engineered every single piece of his own destruction.

"Mr. Harrington," the federal prosecutor's voice cut through the sterile room like a razor, stepping quietly through the heavy door. "Are you ready to sign the formal confession and cooperate with the asset recovery team, or do we proceed directly to trial and let Harrison Cole tear whatever dignity you have left to absolute shreds in front of a live jury?"
Richard picked up the heavy black pen with trembling fingers, signed his name across the dotted line, and wept silently into the empty room.
