Chapter 20: Horizon

Chapter 20: Horizon
Three years to the exact day after that fateful, bloody afternoon on the Montgomery County courthouse steps, Khloe stood quietly on the windswept shoreline of Nantucket. The cool, salty ocean breeze whipped gently through her long hair, carrying the sharp scent of the Atlantic surf. A few yards away, little Madeline was running gleefully along the wet sand, laughing as she hunted for shiny seashells left behind by the receding tide.
This was the exact island where Richard had once pulled her close during their honeymoon, whispering grand, manipulative promises about a shared future that turned out to be a hollow lie. She had deliberately returned to these shores to permanently overwrite the bitter memory with light and freedom.
Harrison walked up quietly beside her, handing her a warm paper cup of artisan coffee before gazing out across the vast horizon. They stood together in comfortable, unbreakable silence for a long moment, watching the powerful ocean waves crash rhythmically against the pristine sand.
"You did good, Khloe," Harrison said quietly, his voice carrying the deep warmth of a brother who had protected his own through fire and blood.
Khloe smiled softly, pulling her heavy wool coat a little tighter against the brisk coastal wind. She looked out toward her daughter, who was safe, happy, entirely healthy, and completely oblivious to the fierce darkness her uncle had once had to navigate to bring her safely into the light.

"We did, Harry," she replied softly.
She turned her face completely toward the bright morning sun rising steadily over the endless ocean, feeling completely, unconditionally, and beautifully free.
