Chapter 8: The Cornered Animal

Richard Harrington was completely out on a meager, heavily restricted bail, confined indefinitely to a run-down, cheap roadside motel on the outskirts of Philadelphia because the federal government had seized every single residential property, luxury car, and bank account he owned. His passport was revoked. His elite friends had vanished like smoke in the wind. Desperation is a corrosive acid that makes intelligent men profoundly, dangerously foolish.

In a blinding fit of alcoholic panic and paranoid delusion, Richard violated the strict federal restraining order late one evening and drove a rental car straight to Montgomery General Hospital. He managed to slip past the tired front desk staff during a shift change, driven by a deranged compulsion to beg Khloe to call off her brother and halt the federal indictments before his life was completely eradicated.

He didn't even make it past the elevators on the pediatric ward.

Two massive private security contractors clad in sharp, dark tactical suits stepped silently out of the architectural shadows, grabbing Richard by the shoulders and slamming him violently against the corridor wall with bone-jarring force.

A moment later, the private elevator pinged softly, and Harrison Cole stepped out into the hallway, slowly adjusting the pristine cuffs of his shirt.

"You really are remarkably stupid, Richard," Harrison whispered, his voice dangerously soft as he closed the distance between them. "Violating a federal restraining order while actively facing thirty counts of corporate fraud? You are practically begging for a solitary confinement cell."

Harrison gave a subtle, cold nod to the guards holding the wheezing, terrified man. "Call the local precinct. Tell them a violent felon has been detained for trespassing in a secure medical ward."
