Chapter 7: The Plea Deal

Deep within the grim, fluorescent-lit corridors of the county holding facility, Vanessa Kensington was losing her mind. Two weeks of prison food, concrete walls, and endless silence had completely stripped away her glamorous, manicured facade. When her overworked public defender finally walked into the visitation booth with a message straight from the District Attorney’s office, Vanessa practically threw herself against the plexiglass divider, her fingernails scratching desperately at the surface.

"What did they say?" she demanded, her voice shrill and desperate. "Did Harrison offer a settlement? Can I post bail?"

"There is no bail, Vanessa, and Harrison Cole isn't handling your criminal docket—the State of Pennsylvania is," her lawyer explained quietly, sliding a single sheet of paper through the slot. "However, the federal prosecutors handling the Harrington corporate fraud case reached out to the DA. They are willing to offer a very specific, limited window for cooperation."

Vanessa narrowed her eyes, suspicion warring with her overwhelming terror. "Cooperation about what?"

"They are building an airtight, multi-count federal indictment against Richard," the lawyer continued. "They already know about the offshore accounts in the Caymans, but they need an insider witness to testify regarding the fraudulent interior design invoices you submitted through your firm to launder the corporate kickbacks."

Vanessa didn't hesitate for even a single fraction of a second. The man who had promised her penthouses, luxury cars, and a permanent place in Philadelphia high society had left her to rot in a cage without looking back.

"I’ll give them everything," Vanessa spat out, her eyes blazing with a sudden, vicious hatred. "I have the encrypted emails, the text message backups, the exact ledgers. I want complete immunity in exchange."

"You won't get immunity for pushing an eight-month-pregnant woman down a flight of marble stairs," her lawyer corrected flatly. "But the DA is willing to drop the first-degree attempted murder charge down to aggravated assault. You’ll plead guilty. You’re looking at five to seven years instead of twenty."

Vanessa swallowed hard, the bitter pill tasting like ash in her mouth. She closed her eyes, defeated, and slowly nodded her head. "Do it."
