Chapter 3: The Premature Miracle

Chapter 3: The Premature Miracle

The rhythmic, mechanical beeping of the heart monitor was the very first sound that pierced through the heavy fog in Khloe’s mind. Her eyelids fluttered open slowly, feeling as though they were lined with lead, greeted immediately by the harsh, utilitarian fluorescent lights of the Intensive Care Unit. A dull, suffocating wave of pain radiated deep through her lower half, reminding her of the nightmare she had just survived.

Harrison was sitting upright in a rigid plastic visitor's chair directly beside her bed, staring intently down at the screen of his encrypted smartphone. The microsecond he saw the subtle shift in her expression, he dropped the phone onto the bedside table and lunged forward, his large, warm hand securely gripping her frail, cold fingers.

"Harry..." she rasped, her voice sounding like dry sandpaper scraping across stone. "The... the baby. Where is my baby?"

Harrison’s tight, permanently clenched jaw visibly relaxed, and a small, deeply genuine smile finally cracked across his hardened, exhausted features.

"She’s fighting, Khloe," Harrison said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "She’s tiny—three pounds, two ounces. The doctors had to deliver her prematurely because of the trauma. She’s currently down in the NICU inside a closed incubator, hooked up to a dozen wires... but she is breathing on her own. She’s strong. Just like her mother."

Hot, heavy tears spilled fast and heavy down Khloe’s pale cheeks, soaking instantly into the hospital pillow. She had lost so much over the past few hours—her illusions, her marriage, her sense of safety—but the cruel universe had miraculously allowed her to keep the one light that mattered most in her world.

"I need... I need to see her," Khloe whispered, trying weakly to pull herself up against the pillows.

"You will," Harrison promised softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss against her damp forehead. "Just rest your body first. Let me handle the garbage outside these doors."
