Chapter 11 - The Exile ReturnsThe skyline of London was painted in the dreary, oppressive grey of a winter morning, a stark contrast to the brilliant diamond Ethan Caldwell had just slipped onto Rosa Martinez’s finger halfway across the world.

In a penthouse overlooking the Thames, Julian Caldwell swirled a glass of neat bourbon. He was three years older than Ethan, sharing the same striking steel-grey eyes, but where Ethan’s gaze held a sharp, disciplined intensity, Julian’s was hollow. It was the look of a man who viewed the world as a chessboard and its people as entirely expendable pawns.
Julian had been exiled from the Caldwell empire ten years ago. Their father, a ruthless man in his own right, had drawn the line at Julian’s sociopathic business practices—practices that had nearly resulted in the federal indictment of the entire family. Julian had been handed a massive trust fund and a one-way ticket to Europe, explicitly banned from Caldwell Global’s operations.
But their father was dead now. And Ethan, the golden boy, the disciplined machine, had suddenly developed a fatal flaw.
"A maid," Julian murmured to the empty room, tossing the private investigator's dossier onto his glass desk. It landed next to a close-up photograph of Rosa and Lily. "You conquered Wall Street, little brother, and you let yourself be undone by a woman who scrubs floors."
Julian smiled, a chilling, predatory curving of his lips. He picked up his phone and dialed a private number.
"Prepare the jet," Julian commanded. "I’m going back to New York. It’s time to congratulate my brother on his engagement. And then, it’s time to take back my company."
Back in New York, the Caldwell estate was a whirlwind of joyous chaos. The news of Ethan and Rosa’s engagement had broken the internet. The public, starved for a modern-day fairy tale, had become utterly obsessed with the billionaire and his beautiful, humble bride.
Rosa stood in the center of the master suite, laughing as Lily twirled around in a miniature tulle skirt, holding Button the rabbit by the ear.
"I'm a princess!" Lily giggled, collapsing onto the plush rug.
"You are," Rosa agreed, her heart incredibly full. She looked down at her left hand, the sapphire and diamond ring catching the morning light. It still felt like a dream.
Ethan walked into the room, already dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, though his tie was undone. He leaned against the doorframe, watching them with a look of such profound peace that it made Rosa’s breath catch.
"The wedding planners are downstairs," Ethan said, walking over to scoop Lily up into his arms, kissing her cheek loudly, causing her to shriek with laughter. "They want to discuss flowers. I told them I don't care if we get married in a greenhouse or on the moon, as long as it happens within the next three months."
Rosa smiled, walking over to adjust his collar and tie his silk tie. "Three months? Ethan, people take a year to plan a wedding."
"I’ve waited long enough," Ethan replied, his hands settling on her waist. "I’m not waiting a year to make you my wife. Besides, my legal team has finalized Lily’s name change. As of yesterday, she is legally Lily Grace Caldwell."
Tears pricked Rosa’s eyes. She leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me," he murmured. "Just marry me."
Their bubble of happiness, however, was about to be pierced. As Ethan’s motorcade pulled into the underground garage of Caldwell Enterprises an hour later, Marcus, his head of security, stepped out of the lead SUV with a grim expression.
"Sir," Marcus said quietly, stopping Ethan before he reached the private elevator. "We have a security breach in the executive lobby."
Ethan’s brow furrowed. "A breach?"
May you like
"It’s Julian, sir," Marcus said, his voice tense. "He’s sitting in your office."
The warmth that had filled Ethan all morning vanished, replaced by an arctic, lethal cold. "Lock down the executive floor," Ethan commanded. "No one gets in or out."
