Chapter 6 - The Armor of SilkThe transition from a ghost to the matriarch of the Caldwell empire was not something that happened quietly. For two months, Ethan had kept the gates of the Greenwich estate firmly locked against the outside world, giving Rosa the time she needed to breathe, to heal, and to realize that she was no longer a target. But Ethan Caldwell was a man who ruled empires; he could not stay hidden forever. And more importantly, he refused to hide the woman he loved.

The upcoming Autumn Equinox Gala in Manhattan was the social event of the season. It was where billions of dollars changed hands over champagne, where reputations were forged and destroyed. Ethan had always attended out of sheer obligation. This year, he was attending to make a statement.
"I don't belong in a room like that, Ethan," Rosa said softly, staring at the breathtaking array of gowns spread across the bed in the master suite.
A team of the world’s most exclusive stylists had been fluttering around the room for two hours, hand-delivering silks and chiffons from Paris and Milan. Now, they had tactfully withdrawn, leaving Ethan and Rosa alone.
Ethan stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. He looked at their reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror. Rosa was breathtaking even in simple jeans and a sweater, but there was a lingering hesitation in her dark eyes—the phantom weight of the maid's apron she had worn for two years.
"You belong wherever you choose to be," Ethan murmured, his voice a low, reassuring rumble against her neck. "And you belong with me. They are going to stare, Rosa. They are going to whisper. But they will do it with absolute respect, or they will find themselves utterly ruined by morning. I promise you that."
Rosa leaned into his strength. The memory of the St. Regis masquerade—the night they had met in the dark—flashed through her mind. She had been invisible then, a girl holding a tray of hors d'oeuvres. Now, she was the woman holding the heart of the most powerful man in New York.
"Which one?" she asked, gesturing to the dresses.
Ethan’s eyes scanned the bed before settling on a gown in the corner. It was a masterpiece of midnight-blue velvet, off-the-shoulder, with a subtle, sweeping train. It didn't scream for attention with sequins or diamonds; it commanded it with quiet, undeniable elegance.
"That one," Ethan said, kissing her temple. "It matches the night I found you."
Downstairs, the sound of a discordant piano chord echoed through the hallway. Lily was practicing. Ethan chuckled, the sound rich and warm.
"We need to get her a proper instructor," Ethan mused. "Though I admit, I enjoy her avant-garde phase."
Rosa smiled, the tension bleeding out of her shoulders. She turned in his arms, looking up into his intense, steel-grey eyes. "She asked me this morning if 'Daddy' was going to build her a castle."
May you like
Ethan’s eyes softened, a profound tenderness settling over his sharp features. "If she wants one, I'll buy the mountain to put it on. But right now, my priority is making sure her mother knows she is the queen of this one."
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, consuming kiss that tasted of promises and fierce protection. When he pulled away, he traced her jawline with a gentle thumb. "Put on the armor of silk, Rosa. Tonight, we conquer the city."
