Chapter 12 - The Viper's WhisperRosa was enjoying a rare moment of quiet. With Ethan at the office and Lily napping under the watchful eye of the nanny, Rosa had decided to visit a private bridal boutique in Manhattan. It was a closed-door appointment, arranged by Ethan’s team to ensure no paparazzi could intrude.

She stood on the circular pedestal, enveloped in ivory silk, staring at her reflection. She looked like a queen. Yet, a tiny, lingering voice of doubt whispered in the back of her mind—the voice of the girl who had been told she was nothing her entire life.
"A beautiful gown. Though perhaps a bit... ambitious, for someone of your pedigree."
Rosa spun around. The boutique was supposed to be empty, save for the owner who had stepped into the back room.
Standing by the velvet sofas was a man. He looked startlingly like Ethan—the same height, the same broad shoulders, the same expensive tailoring. But his eyes... his eyes were completely devoid of the warmth Ethan saved for her.
"Who are you?" Rosa asked, stepping off the pedestal, her instincts instantly flaring.
"Julian Caldwell," he said smoothly, walking forward with a predatory grace. "Ethan’s older, much-forgotten brother. He didn't mention me? I suppose he wouldn't. Ethan likes to pretend the ugly parts of our family don't exist."
Rosa held her ground, lifting her chin. "If you are Ethan's brother, you are welcome to speak with him. He is at the office."
"Oh, I've already visited the office," Julian chuckled, trailing a finger over a rack of veils. "My little brother was quite ungracious. So, I thought I would come meet the woman who has him so utterly distracted. I have to say, Rosa, I’m impressed. From carrying hors d'oeuvres to wearing millions in diamonds. You’ve played the game brilliantly."
"I'm not playing a game," Rosa said coldly.
"Everyone is playing a game, Rosa," Julian countered, stopping a few feet from her. His gaze was dissecting, trying to find her weak points. "Ethan is a Caldwell. He is wired to conquer, to acquire, and to discard when an asset loses its value. Right now, you are his shiny new toy. You represent rebellion. But what happens when the novelty wears off? What happens when he looks at you and remembers that you don't belong in his world?"
Rosa’s heart hammered, but she refused to let him see her bleed. She remembered Ethan’s words in the snow: You are not that scared girl anymore.
"You don't know your brother at all," Rosa said, her voice steady and unyielding. "Ethan builds. You clearly only know how to tear down. If you came here to intimidate me, Julian, you are wasting your time. I survived monsters far worse than a man in a tailored suit with a bruised ego."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine anger crossing his features. "You are bold. I'll give you that. But boldness won't save you when the empire fractures. Enjoy the silk, Rosa. It burns very quickly."
He turned and walked out just as the boutique owner returned. Rosa stood perfectly still, her hands trembling slightly, but her spine straight of steel. Julian wanted a war. He was going to find out that she was no longer a civilian.
