Chapter 14 - The Gala of KnivesThe Spring Solstice Charity Gala was the most exclusive event of the season, hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was also Julian Caldwell’s chosen battlefield.

He had spent the last two weeks quietly buying favor with minor shareholders, planting insidious rumors about Rosa’s background in the tabloids. The Gold-Digging Maid. The Billionaire's Blind Spot. Julian intended to use the gala to publicly humiliate Rosa, proving to the old-money elites that Ethan had lost his mind.
When Ethan and Rosa arrived, the flashbulbs were blinding. Rosa wore a striking crimson gown that fit her like liquid fire, an armor of absolute confidence. Ethan was beside her, a dark, protective shadow, his hand resting securely on her waist.
Inside the Temple of Dendur, the elite mingled. The moment Rosa and Ethan stepped into the room, the whispers began. Julian was already there, holding court with a group of influential investors.
"Ah, the happy couple," Julian announced loudly as they approached, his voice carrying over the string quartet. He raised his glass. "Tell me, Rosa, is it true you used to cater this very event? Do you know where the kitchen is, or should we ask the waitstaff to show you?"
A few of the investors chuckled nervously. Ethan’s jaw locked, and he stepped forward, ready to end Julian right there.
But Rosa placed a gentle, restraining hand on Ethan’s chest. She stepped past him, directly into Julian’s space.
"I do know where the kitchen is, Julian," Rosa said, her voice crystal clear and carrying perfectly through the quieted room. "I also know that the people in that kitchen work fourteen-hour shifts to feed men like you, who have never worked a day in your life without your father’s name paving the way."
The silence in the room became absolute. Julian’s smirk froze.
Rosa didn't stop. She turned slightly to address the investors. "I scrubbed floors. I served champagne. I did whatever it took to keep my daughter safe. And I stand here today, not because I was handed a trust fund, but because the man I love respects strength, not entitlement."
She turned her sharp, dark eyes back to Julian. "You think my past is a weapon you can use against me. But it’s not a weapon, Julian. It’s my foundation. And it is far stronger than anything you have ever built."
Ethan stepped up beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist, looking at his brother with absolute triumph. "My fiancée, gentlemen. The future of Caldwell Global."
The investors, recognizing a sinking ship when they saw one, slowly nodded in respect to Rosa, turning their backs on Julian.
Julian stood alone, his face pale with fury and humiliation. His public execution had been flipped flawlessly. Rosa hadn't just survived the viper's pit; she had charmed the snakes.

As they walked away, Ethan leaned down, kissing Rosa’s cheek. "Remind me never to negotiate against you, Mrs. Caldwell."
"I'm just getting started," Rosa smiled.
