Chapter 18 - The BlackoutNature has a way of reminding even the most powerful men that they are not entirely in control.

It was late January. Rosa was three days past her due date. A massive, historic nor'easter had descended upon the East Coast, burying Connecticut under three feet of snow. The wind howled like a banshee, tearing branches from ancient oak trees and rendering the roads completely impassable.

At 11:00 PM, the lights in the Greenwich estate flickered, buzzed, and died.

The backup generators kicked in almost immediately, bathing the halls in a softer, dimmer emergency light, but the massive central heating system was struggling against the unprecedented cold.

In the master suite, Rosa gripped the edge of the heavy mahogany bedpost, her knuckles white. A sharp, agonizing contraction ripped through her abdomen, stealing the breath from her lungs.

"Ethan!" she gasped out, dropping to her knees on the thick rug.

Ethan was there in a microsecond. He caught her, lowering her gently to the floor and supporting her back. His face was a mask of controlled panic.

"Breathe, mi amor, just breathe," Ethan instructed, his voice steady despite the adrenaline flooding his veins. He looked up as Marcus sprinted into the room, a flashlight in hand.

"The roads are gone, sir," Marcus reported grimly. "The plow trucks can't get through the drifts. The private doctor is stuck on I-95, and no helicopters are cleared to fly in this wind."

Ethan’s jaw locked. He looked down at Rosa, whose face was pale with pain. The last time she gave birth, she had been alone in a sterile, indifferent charity hospital ward. He had sworn she would have the finest medical team in the world this time. But the storm had stripped all of that away.

"We do it here," Ethan decided instantly. "Marcus, wake the nanny, keep Lily upstairs and distracted. Then bring me the medical emergency kits, sterile towels, and boil water. Now!"

As Marcus ran out, Ethan pulled Rosa into his arms, carrying her to the bed. He arranged the pillows behind her, stripping off his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves.

"Ethan, I'm scared," Rosa cried out as another contraction hit, much closer this time. "It's too fast. With Lily, it took a day. This is too fast."

"I am right here," Ethan said, his voice an anchor in the storm. He gripped her hand, pressing his forehead against hers. The dim emergency lights cast long shadows in the room, suddenly reminding them both of the blackout at the St. Regis years ago.

"Do you remember the dark?" Ethan whispered fiercely, locking his steel-grey eyes onto hers. "Do you remember what you told me when the lights went out?"

Rosa took a shuddering breath, focusing on the sheer intensity of his gaze. "I told you... I told you that the dark isn't something to fear. It's just a canvas waiting for the stars."

"Exactly," Ethan said, kissing her forehead. "You are the bravest woman I know, Rosa. We are going to do this together. You and me. Just like always."

For the next two hours, the billionaire who directed global markets took orders from his laboring wife. Ethan was a rock, offering his hands for her to crush, whispering endless words of encouragement, his own fear buried deep beneath his absolute devotion to her.

As the grandfather clock downstairs chimed 2:00 AM, Rosa gave a final, agonizing push, a cry tearing from her throat.

And then, cutting through the howling of the blizzard outside, came a new sound.

A sharp, furious, beautiful wail.

Ethan caught his son. His hands, which had brokered billion-dollar deals, were trembling uncontrollably as he cleared the baby's airways and wrapped him in a warm, sterile towel.

Tears streamed down Ethan’s face as he laid the screaming, red-faced infant onto Rosa’s chest.

"A boy," Ethan wept, kissing Rosa’s exhausted, sweat-drenched forehead. "Rosa, he's perfect. You're perfect."

May you like

Rosa held her son, exhaustion completely overwhelmed by a fierce, blinding love. She looked at Ethan, the ruthless corporate titan who was now crying openly over his family.

"Leo," Rosa whispered, touching the baby's dark tuft of hair. "Leo Caldwell."
