Chapter 13: Desperate Measures

Chapter 13: Desperate Measures
By 9:00 PM that evening, the news had leaked to the financial press. The Wall Street Journal dropped an exclusive online bombshell: VANGUARD TECH CEO INVESTIGATED BY SEC FOR MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME.
The fallout was instantaneous. Vanguard’s private stock valuation hit absolute zero. The board of directors held an emergency, five-minute phone call where Julian was permanently terminated with cause. His corporate access badges were deactivated while he was still sitting in the back of his town car.
Eleanor was at home in her Brooklyn brownstone, wearing a cashmere sweater and reading a bedtime story to Lily. The little girl was nestled under her duvet, her velvet rabbit tucked securely beside her, blissfully unaware of the corporate bloodbath her mother had orchestrated that afternoon.
After Lily finally drifted off to sleep, Eleanor quietly closed the bedroom door and walked down the mahogany staircase to the first floor.
Suddenly, a heavy, aggressive knocking rattled her front door.
Eleanor paused. She walked into the kitchen, picked up her phone, and opened her security camera app. Standing on her front porch was an older man, flanked by two massive men in dark suits who looked distinctly like private security. The older man shared Julian’s sharp jawline and arrogant posture, but his eyes were hardened by decades of ruthlessness.
It was Marcus Pierce. Julian’s father, a billionaire real estate tycoon with a reputation for destroying anyone who got in his family's way.
Eleanor didn't hesitate. She didn't call the police. She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the heavy oak door open, leaving the iron security screen locked between them.
"Eleanor Vance," Marcus Pierce said. His voice was a low, dangerous rumble. He didn't bother with pleasantries. "My son is currently sitting in my study, crying like a child because you destroyed his life over a spilled drink."
"He destroyed his own life, Mr. Pierce," Eleanor replied, her voice steady and unimpressed. "I simply handed the authorities the flashlight to see what he was doing in the dark."
Marcus stepped closer to the iron grate, his face twisting with fury. "You think you're clever. You think because you wear a fancy suit and work for Richard Sterling that you are untouchable. I have bought and sold judges in this city. I have destroyed law firms ten times the size of yours. You are going to call the DA tomorrow morning, and you are going to tell them you fabricated those financial documents to gain leverage in your civil suit."
"Are you asking me to commit perjury and federal obstruction of justice?" Eleanor asked smoothly.
"I am telling you what you are going to do," Marcus growled, gripping the iron bars of the security door. "If you do not drop this, Eleanor, I will make sure you never practice law in New York again. I will drag your name through the mud. I will find every skeleton in your closet, and I will ruin you."
Eleanor let out a soft, chilling laugh. It was a sound devoid of any humor.
She lifted a hand and pointed to the small, blinking red light nestled discretely in the intricate masonry above the porch.
"That is a 4K, cloud-connected security camera with a parabolic microphone, Mr. Pierce," Eleanor informed him, her eyes locking onto his. "It just recorded you attempting to extort and intimidate a federal witness in an ongoing SEC investigation. That is a felony carrying a mandatory minimum of five years in a federal penitentiary."
Marcus froze, his eyes darting up to the blinking red light. The two bodyguards behind him shifted uncomfortably, suddenly realizing they were accomplices to a federal crime.
"Your son thought his wealth shielded him from the consequences of his actions," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "It seems he inherited that delusion from you. You are on my property. You have exactly ten seconds to leave, or I am sending this footage directly to the FBI Field Office in Manhattan. One."
Marcus Pierce stared at her. He had spent his entire life bullying people into submission. But looking into Eleanor Vance’s eyes, he saw an absolute, terrifying certainty. He saw a woman who could not be bought, could not be bullied, and would stop at nothing to protect her child.
"Two," Eleanor counted, her hand hovering over the keypad of her security system.
"You're a monster," Marcus hissed, his facade of power crumbling.
"Three."
May you like
Marcus turned on his heel and stormed down the brownstone steps, his bodyguards hurrying after him. They climbed into their idling black SUV and sped away into the night.
Eleanor watched the taillights disappear around the corner. She locked the heavy oak door, turned off the porch light, and went into the kitchen to pour herself a glass of wine. The Pierce empire was collapsing, and the crash had only just begun.
