Chapter 9: An Unlikely Alliance

Later that afternoon, the atmosphere inside the sleek, mahogany-paneled offices of Sterling, Vance & Hastings was electric. Word had already spread through the bullpen that Eleanor Vance had personally dropped a fifty-million-dollar anvil on the most hated CEO in America.

Eleanor sat at her desk, her reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose as she reviewed the initial responses from Julian’s terrified legal team. They were already begging for a private mediation session. Eleanor tossed the request into her recycling bin. She wasn't interested in mediating. She was interested in drawing blood.

Her desk phone chimed. "Ms. Vance," her paralegal, Michael, said, his voice unusually strained. "There is a woman at the reception desk. She is wearing oversized sunglasses and a silk scarf, and she is refusing to give her name to security. But she specifically asked for you, and... well, she looks incredibly distressed."

Eleanor frowned. "Bring her back, Michael. Use the private partner hallway."

Two minutes later, the heavy oak door to Eleanor’s office clicked shut. The woman stood awkwardly in the center of the room. Slowly, she removed the large, dark sunglasses and unwrapped the silk scarf from her hair.

It was Chloe.

The runaway bride looked entirely entirely different from the radiant woman at the Plaza Hotel. Her eyes were swollen and rimmed with red, her skin was pale, and she looked as though she hadn't slept in days. She stood clutching a designer handbag to her chest like a shield.

"Mrs. Pierce," Eleanor said, keeping her voice incredibly gentle. She stood up and gestured to the plush leather sofa in the corner of her office. "Please, sit down. Can I get you a glass of water? Tea?"

"It’s not Mrs. Pierce," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as she sank into the sofa. "I filed for an annulment on Monday morning. I refuse to carry his name."

"Good," Eleanor said softly, taking a seat in the armchair opposite her. "That was a smart move. But you didn't come to a corporate litigation firm just to tell me about your annulment, Chloe. Why are you here?"

Chloe took a shaky breath, tears welling up in her eyes. The dam broke, and she began to sob, her shoulders shaking violently. Eleanor didn't rush her; she simply handed the young woman a box of tissues and waited patiently.

"He’s destroying me," Chloe wept, wiping her eyes. "Julian called me last night. He was drunk, and he was absolutely furious about your lawsuit. He told me that if I didn't publicly stand by him—if I didn't go on television and play the supportive, forgiving wife to counter your narrative—he would ruin my family."

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, the temperature in the room instantly dropping. "Explain."

"My father owns a mid-sized logistics company," Chloe explained, her voice trembling. "Vanguard Tech is their biggest client. Julian said he would cancel all their contracts effective immediately. He said he would bankrupt my father. And then... then he said he would freeze all of my personal bank accounts, claiming they were marital assets, and leave me with absolutely nothing. He said he would drag the annulment out for years."

Eleanor sat perfectly still, absorbing the information. Julian Pierce wasn't just a clumsy drunk or an arrogant bully. He was a systematic abuser who used his immense wealth as a weapon to terrorize anyone who defied him—whether it was a seven-year-old child or his own wife.

"He thinks he has me cornered," Chloe whispered, looking down at her hands. "I don't have the money to fight him in court, Eleanor. His lawyers will crush me. I didn't know where else to go. I remembered how you stood up to him at the wedding. You weren't afraid of him."

Eleanor stood up, walked over to her desk, and pulled a fresh, crisp legal pad and a silver pen. She walked back and placed it on the coffee table in front of Chloe.

"Julian believes his wealth makes him untouchable," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into that cold, absolute tone that made corporate titans tremble. "He believes he can isolate you, starve you of resources, and force you into submission. He is wrong."

Eleanor reached into her pocket, pulled out a single, silver quarter, and placed it on the table.

"I am officially retaining you as my client, Chloe. Your retainer fee is twenty-five cents. As of this exact second, I represent you in all matters regarding your annulment and any civil protections you require against Julian Pierce."

May you like

Chloe stared at the quarter, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks, this time out of profound relief. "Why are you doing this for me?"

"Because," Eleanor said, a dangerous, predatory smile touching her lips, "when I dismantle Julian Pierce, I want to make sure I take every single piece of his life away from him. Let him try to freeze your accounts. He’s about to find out that he no longer controls the board."
