Chapter 8: Serving Justice

The executive boardroom of Vanguard Tech was a masterpiece of modern corporate intimidation. Suspended sixty stories above the Manhattan skyline, it featured floor-to-ceiling glass walls, a massive table carved from a single slab of reclaimed walnut, and a panoramic view of the Hudson River. Normally, Julian Pierce used this room to exert his dominance over nervous vendors and eager startup founders.

Today, however, the room felt like a concrete bunker, and Julian was the one pinned under the crossfire.

The emergency board meeting had been raging for two hours. Julian paced at the head of the table, his tie discarded, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He was desperately trying to sell the board on Apex Strategy’s new PR campaign. He had a laser pointer in hand, gesturing wildly to a presentation slide showing a slight uptick in positive social media sentiment.

"The extortion narrative is taking hold, gentlemen," Julian insisted, tapping the screen. His voice was hoarse, edged with a frantic, pleading energy that made the seasoned investors in the room deeply uncomfortable. "We’ve successfully seeded the idea that this woman, this opportunistic guest, is demanding a six-figure payout. The public is already turning on her. The stock will stabilize by Friday. We just need to hold the line."

Richard Sterling, the ruthless chairman of the board, sat at the opposite end of the table, his hands steeped together. He wasn't looking at the presentation. He was looking at Julian with the cold, detached gaze of a butcher inspecting a slab of meat.

"You are playing a very dangerous game with public opinion, Julian," Richard warned, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. "If this woman comes forward with proof that you fabricated this extortion claim, it will no longer be a PR crisis. It will be fraud."

"She’s a nobody, Richard!" Julian scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "She’s a single mother from Brooklyn who got lucky with a plus-one invite. What is she going to do? Hire an ambulance chaser? Apex Strategy will bury her in paperwork until she runs out of money and quietly drops it. I’ve handled people like her a hundred times."

Julian barely finished his sentence when the heavy, frosted glass doors of the boardroom abruptly swung open.

Julian’s executive assistant, Sarah, stood in the doorway, her face ghostly pale. She wasn't alone. Flanking her were two Vanguard Tech security guards, who looked entirely helpless, and a burly, unsmiling man wearing a cheap gray suit and holding a massive stack of manila envelopes.

"Sarah, I said no interruptions!" Julian barked, slamming his hand down on the walnut table.

"Mr. Pierce, I tried to stop him," Sarah stammered, stepping aside. "He bypassed the lobby front desk. He had a court order for immediate entry."

The man in the gray suit didn't wait for an invitation. He strode confidently into the billionaire’s inner sanctum, his cheap rubber-soled shoes squeaking slightly against the polished hardwood floor. He walked directly up to the head of the table, stopping inches away from Julian.

"Julian Pierce?" the man asked, his tone utterly bored.

"Who the hell are you? Security, get him out of here!" Julian shouted, his face flushing crimson.

The man didn't flinch. He simply raised the massive, three-inch-thick stack of legal documents and dropped them onto the walnut table with a deafening THWACK. The sound echoed through the silent boardroom like a gunshot.

"Julian Pierce, you have been officially served," the process server announced. He pulled a digital camera from his pocket, snapped a quick photo of Julian standing next to the documents for proof of service, and turned on his heel. "Have a great afternoon, gentlemen."

The room descended into a stunned, absolute silence as the man walked out.

Julian stared at the manila envelopes as if they were a live explosive. His hands trembled slightly as he reached out and flipped open the top folder. The first page was a standard New York State Supreme Court summons, but it was the bold, black lettering at the top that made Julian’s blood run cold.

PLAINTIFF: ELEANOR VANCE.

REPRESENTED BY: STERLING, VANCE & HASTINGS.

DAMAGES SOUGHT: $50,000,000.00 USD.

"Vance..." Richard Sterling whispered from the other end of the table. The chairman stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. He walked over, snatched the document out of Julian’s hands, and read the plaintiff’s name.

When Richard looked back at Julian, his expression was a mix of sheer horror and blinding rage.

"A nobody?" Richard hissed, shoving the document into Julian’s chest. "You told me she was a nobody? Julian, you arrogant, incompetent fool. Eleanor Vance is a named partner at one of the most ruthless corporate litigation firms on the East Coast. She didn't demand a hundred thousand dollars in hush money. She just sued you, this company, and your PR firm for fifty million dollars in punitive damages for defamation!"

Julian’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself. "No. No, that’s impossible. She’s... she’s just a mother..."

"She’s a shark," Richard roared, his composure completely shattering. "And you just threw blood in the water! Meeting adjourned. Julian, do not leave this building. The board is convening an executive session without you immediately."
