Chapter 7: The Wrong Mother

While Julian’s PR team celebrated their momentary victory, Eleanor Vance was stepping out of a black town car in front of a towering high-rise in Midtown Manhattan. She was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal pinstripe suit, carrying a vintage leather briefcase.

She walked through the revolving glass doors and stepped into the private elevator, swiping a gold keycard that granted her access to the top floor. The silver lettering on the mahogany reception wall read: STERLING, VANCE & HASTINGS.

It was one of the most feared, ruthless, and elite corporate litigation firms on the Eastern Seaboard. And Eleanor Vance wasn't just an employee. She was a named partner.

As she walked down the plushly carpeted hallway toward her corner office, junior associates practically pressed themselves against the walls to get out of her way. Eleanor was a legend in the building. She was a legal sniper, known for dismantling Fortune 500 companies, corrupt executives, and hostile takeover attempts with chilling efficiency.

When she entered her office, her paralegal, a sharp young man named Michael, was waiting nervously by her desk. He had a stack of the morning tabloids in his hands.

"Good morning, Ms. Vance," Michael said, hesitating slightly. "I assume you've seen the digital alerts. Julian Pierce’s PR firm is pushing a coordinated defamation campaign against you. They're alleging extortion."

Eleanor didn't look angry. She casually draped her coat over a chair, poured herself a cup of black coffee from the French press on her credenza, and sat down at her desk. She picked up the top tabloid, reading the headline about her supposed $100,000 demand.

A slow, predatory smile touched the corners of her mouth.

"Extortion," Eleanor murmured, taking a sip of her coffee. "How remarkably unoriginal. But legally speaking, how wonderfully actionable."

"Should I draft a cease and desist letter to Apex Strategy?" Michael asked, pen poised over his notepad.

"A cease and desist is a warning shot, Michael," Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying light. "I do not fire warning shots. I want to sue him. And I want to sue the publications printing this garbage. Defamation, libel, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and tortious interference."

"Understood," Michael nodded. "What are we seeking in damages?"

Eleanor set her coffee cup down. She thought of Lily, crying into her dress. She thought of Julian’s sneering face, telling her she was a charity case who couldn't afford a single mother's salary. She thought of the absolute arrogance of a man who believed he could ruin a child to save his own ego.

"Fifty million dollars," Eleanor said evenly.

Michael blinked, momentarily stunned by the sheer size of the number. "Fifty million, Ms. Vance? The court might view that as punitive."

"It is entirely punitive," Eleanor replied, pulling her keyboard toward her. "Julian Pierce believes he can weaponize his wealth against the vulnerable. I am going to teach him that there is always someone higher up on the food chain. I want the injunctions filed by noon. I want subpoenas drafted for Vanguard Tech’s internal communications, looking for any emails authorizing this smear campaign. I want to freeze him, Michael."

By 1:00 PM, a massive, meticulously drafted, eighty-page legal complaint was filed in the New York State Supreme Court. It wasn't just a lawsuit; it was a tactical nuclear strike on Julian Pierce’s entire life.

Eleanor had laid the trap, and the billionaire had walked right into it.
