Chapter 3: Shattered Glass, Shattered Vows
Before Julian could muster a response to Eleanor’s threat, the sharp, rhythmic sound of heavy silk brushing against marble echoed through the silent room.
Chloe was descending from the elevated head table.
She was breathtaking in her custom Vera Wang gown, a vision of ivory lace and imported tulle. But her face, which had been glowing with bridal joy just an hour prior, was now a mask of cold devastation. The crowd naturally parted for her, forming a silent aisle as she walked toward the disaster zone.
"Chloe, honey, wait," Julian pleaded, turning away from Eleanor. He held his hands up in surrender, the arrogant billionaire completely reduced to a groveling mess. "It’s not what it looked like. I tripped. The waiter bumped me earlier, my shoes were slick—"
"Stop talking," Chloe commanded. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that snapped Julian’s mouth shut instantly.
She stopped at the edge of the glass, looking at the destroyed champagne tower, then at Eleanor, and finally down at little Lily. Chloe’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, filled with profound shame for what she had just witnessed.
Then, she looked back at her husband of less than four hours.
"You pointed your finger at a seven-year-old girl," Chloe said, her voice shaking with barely suppressed disgust. "You stood there, in front of all of my friends, all of my family, and you tried to ruin a child’s life so you wouldn't have to admit you were drunk and clumsy."
"I panicked!" Julian whined, taking a step toward her. "Chloe, please. We can fix this. The PR team will spin it. We’ll make a donation to a children’s charity. It’ll be fine."
Chloe stared at him, truly seeing him for the first time. She saw past the immense wealth, the charismatic smile, and the glossy magazine covers. Beneath it all was a hollow, entitled boy who believed the world existed solely to absorb the impact of his mistakes.
"There is no 'we' to fix this, Julian," she whispered.
With slow, deliberate movements, Chloe reached behind her neck. She unclasped the two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar vintage Cartier diamond necklace Julian had given her that morning as a wedding gift. The heavy platinum chain slipped through her fingers.
She didn't hand it to him. She dropped it.

The priceless diamonds clattered onto a nearby cocktail table, the sound ringing out like a gunshot in the quiet ballroom.
Without shedding a single tear, Chloe turned her back on Julian Pierce. She gathered the heavy skirts of her Vera Wang gown and walked toward the grand mahogany exit doors. She didn't look back, leaving Julian completely alone in the wreckage of his own making, while three hundred guests watched the shortest marriage in New York high society history come to an abrupt, spectacular end.
