Chapter 17: Criminal Charges

The federal indictment landed with the crushing weight of a falling anvil. Filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, the formal charging document listed thirty-four distinct counts against Julian Edward Pierce: wire fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, and perjury.

The prosecution team didn't need to build a circumstantial case. Eleanor Vance’s meticulous legal filings, backed by Arthur Pendelton’s ironclad financial ledgers and the encrypted data from Apex Holdings, handed the Department of Justice a slam-dunk prosecution on a silver platter.

Julian sat at the defense table in the federal courthouse, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit instead of his custom Tom Ford tuxedos. His high-priced defense attorney, Harrison Croft, looked entirely defeated, quietly thumbing through a stack of plea-bargain proposals.

The federal prosecutor didn't offer a lenient deal. Given the sheer scale of the embezzlement and the deliberate destruction of investor trust, the government made its stance clear: plead guilty to all counts, forfeit every remaining cent of personal assets, and accept a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in a federal penitentiary, or take it to trial where the evidence guaranteed a fifteen-year sentence.

Julian looked across the courtroom gallery. There were no adoring fans, no sycophantic venture capitalists, no high-society friends. The gallery was entirely empty, save for one person.

Eleanor Vance sat in the front row, wearing her signature charcoal suit, her expression entirely neutral. She didn't look at him with hatred or malice. She looked at him with the cold, detached indifference one might afford a broken machine being hauled off to the scrap yard.

Julian swallowed hard, his hands trembling against the wooden table. He realized, with absolute, crushing finality, that his wealth, his status, and his arrogance had bought him nothing but a prison cell.

With a shaking hand, Julian picked up the pen and signed his name to the plea agreement. The billionaire bully had officially reached the end of the line.
