Chapter 11 - The Federal Warrant

The fluorescent lights of the cheap, pay-by-the-hour motel room flickered violently against the peeling floral wallpaper. The room smelled of stale tobacco, bleach, and damp carpet.
Julian sat on the edge of the saggy mattress, staring at his reflection in the cracked bathroom mirror across the room. He barely recognized himself. The sharp, polished developer who once graced the covers of Architectural Digest was gone. In his place sat a hollowed-out shell with dark circles beneath his bloodshot eyes and stubble covering his jaw.
On the nightstand sat a cheap prepaid burner phone he had bought with his last hundred-dollar bill.
He picked it up, his hands trembling as he dialed Victor Thorne’s private number for the twentieth time.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service or has blocked your caller ID,” the operator’s automated voice droned.
"Damn you, Victor!" Julian screamed, slamming the phone down onto the nightstand.
He was trapped. The federal judge had issued an arrest warrant for trade secret theft and corporate espionage. The news channels had broadcast his picture nationwide. He couldn't go to an airport, he couldn't rent a car with a credit card, and he couldn't ask any of his former high-society friends for help—every single one of them had blocked his number the moment the Sterling press release went live.
Suddenly, a sharp, thunderous pounding echoed against the thin wooden motel door.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! OPEN THE DOOR!"
Julian gasped, jumping up from the bed. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "No... no, no, no!"
"FBI! We have a federal warrant for Julian Vance! Step away from the door with your hands above your head!"
Panic took over. Julian sprinted toward the tiny bathroom window, trying to force it open, but the frame was rusted shut.
BOOM.
The door burst inward, splintering off its hinges. Four heavily armed FBI agents in navy tactical vests with bright yellow letters rushed into the room, assault rifles trained directly on his chest.
"ON THE GROUND! NOW!" an agent barked.
"Wait! You don't understand!" Julian shrieked, pressing his back against the bathroom tile. "I was set up! It was Victor Thorne! He paid me for the code! He forced me—"
Two agents tackled him to the carpet before he could finish the sentence. His face was slammed into the rough, dirty carpet as a knee pinned his shoulder down. The cold, heavy steel of handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.
Special Agent Miller walked into the room, stepping over the broken door frame. He pulled a folded document from his jacket and looked down at Julian with absolute disgust.
"Julian Vance," Agent Miller read coldly. "You are under arrest for federal trade secret theft, computer fraud under the CFAA, and interstate transport of stolen property."
"It was Thorne!" Julian wept, his cheek pressed flat against the floor. "He bribed me! Arrest him!"
Agent Miller crouched down, meeting Julian’s terrified gaze. "Mr. Thorne was interviewed by federal prosecutors two hours ago, Julian. He handed over a recorded phone call where you offered to sell him stolen Sterling source code. He claims he was acting as a good Samaritan to expose your corporate theft."
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. Thorne had set him up from the start. The billionaire rival had used him as disposable bait to test Elena’s defenses, and when the line snapped, Thorne simply cut Julian loose to drown.
"He lied!" Julian sobbed as the agents hauled him violently to his feet. "He gave me two point five million dollars!"
"Which has already been seized by the Department of Justice," Agent Miller replied, gesturing for the officers to lead him out. "Walk."

They marched Julian out into the pouring rain, dragging him past curious motel guests and staring onlookers. As he was shoved into the back of a black armored SUV, Julian looked up at the sky, the cold rain washing over his face.
He realized with terrifying clarity that Elena hadn't just beaten him. She had systematically stripped away every ally, every dollar, and every shred of dignity he possessed until there was nothing left of him but a federal inmate number.
