Chapter 12 - Thorne's Shadow War

While Julian was being processed in a stark federal holding cell, Victor Thorne was pacing in his glass-walled penthouse office on the seventy-fifth floor of Thorne Tower.
The view gave him a command of the entire Seattle skyline, but Thorne felt no sense of peace. On his mahogany desk sat a financial terminal displaying real-time stock ticks. The shares of Thorne International had dipped three percent in morning trading following news of his association with Julian’s legal disaster.
Standing near the desk was Alexei Volkov, Thorne’s head of special operations—a former eastern-bloc intelligence officer who specialized in digital sabotage and corporate black-ops.
"Julian is in federal custody," Volkov reported in his low, gravelly voice. "He will try to bargain with the prosecutor by offering your name."
"Let him try," Thorne scoffed, pouring himself a glass of neat scotch. "I signed a non-disclosure agreement with a shell company three layers deep. The DOJ won't touch me over that pathetic amateur. But Arthur Sterling... Arthur is using this momentum to squeeze our credit lines in Asia."
Thorne slammed his glass on the desk. "I won't let that old bastard and his brilliant daughter push me out of the luxury hospitality sector. The Sterling Reserve is holding its global flagship re-launch in Tokyo in forty-eight hours. Every sovereign wealth fund and luxury conglomerate president will be in that room."
"What do you want done?" Volkov asked.
"Elena built her entire reputation on the 'unbreakable' smart-grid technology," Thorne smirked, a dark, dangerous gleam in his eyes. "If that system fails publicly—if the flagship Tokyo property suffers a catastrophic environmental and infrastructure collapse during her opening keynote—the Sterling brand will be destroyed overnight. Investors will panic, claiming her technology is unstable."
Volkov nodded slowly. "The original source code Julian provided... even though it was watermarked, it gave my engineers a map of their network architecture. We found a latent zero-day vulnerability in their firmware update pipeline."
"Can you trigger it remotely?" Thorne asked, leaning forward.
"Yes," Volkov replied with a cold grin. "During her live presentation, we can inject a corrupted firmware payload. It will shut down the climate controls, freeze the security locks, black out the lighting, and crash their reservation database simultaneously. It will look like a total system failure."
Thorne smiled—a slow, venomous expression. "Do it. Let’s see how cool and collected Elena Sterling looks when her flagship resort turns into a dark, frozen tomb on international television."
Meanwhile, eight thousand miles away in the executive suite of the newly rebranded Sterling Reserve Tokyo, Elena sat surrounded by holographic monitors.
Marcus Vance stood beside her, reviewing the guest list for the grand opening gala. Over five hundred world leaders, tech titans, and billionaires had confirmed their attendance.
"The security team has swept the physical perimeter three times, Ms. Sterling," Marcus said. "Everything is running at peak efficiency."
At that moment, the door to the suite opened, and David Croft walked in accompanied by Elena’s chief cybersecurity director, Dr. Aris Thorne (no relation to Victor).
"Elena," Dr. Aris said, opening his laptop and turning the screen toward her. "We detected an unauthorized ping targeting our automated server cluster in Oregon twenty minutes ago."
Elena didn't look surprised. She slowly leaned back in her leather chair, sipping her green tea. "Where did the signal originate?"
"Routed through three proxy servers in Zurich, but the digital footprint matches a signature used by Volkov's team at Thorne International," Dr. Aris explained. "They think they found a backdoor in our firmware pipeline."
Marcus frowned, panic rising in his chest. "Ms. Sterling, if they attack the system during the gala tomorrow—"
"They aren't finding a backdoor, Marcus," Elena interrupted softly, her voice filled with quiet authority. "I left that vulnerability there deliberately five years ago."
The room went dead silent.
David Croft chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "You set a trap for Victor Thorne five years ago?"
"I designed the smart-grid architecture knowing that eventually, someone would try to steal it or compromise it," Elena explained, her eyes cold as ice. "That 'vulnerability' isn't an entry point into our system. It’s a digital mirror."
Dr. Aris smiled broadly. "The moment Volkov executes his malware payload tomorrow night, the mirror protocol will instantly reflect the malicious code straight back down the open connection path... directly into Thorne International’s primary operational network."

Elena stood up, smoothing the front of her designer blazer.
"Victor Thorne thought he was buying Julian’s key to my house," Elena said, a lethal smile touching her lips. "Tomorrow night, he’s going to burn down his own."
