Chapter 6 - The Fall from Grace

The cold morning breeze swept across the polished granite courtyard outside the Lumière Cascades, blowing dried oak leaves against the expensive leather of Julian’s designer loafers.
He stood on the curb, his arms folded tightly against the chill. He had no coat. No wallet. No phone service. Just a handful of crushed legal documents shoved into his jacket pocket and the devastating realization that his nine-year marriage had been built upon a stage setting owned entirely by his wife.
Behind him, two armed security guards in crisp grey suits stood like statues at the resort’s entrance, ensuring he didn't take a single step backward.
A sleek black town car pulled up, but it wasn't for him. A group of high-profile financial journalists stepped out, cameras already flashing. Word had leaked with terrifying speed.
"Julian!" a reporter called out, shoving a microphone toward his face. "Is it true that Lumière Management declared Chapter 11 insolvency overnight?"
"Julian, can you comment on rumors that Aethelgard Holdings terminated your operational lease?"
"Where is your wife, Elena Sterling? Is she taking over executive operations?"
Julian ducked his head, turning his face away from the blinding flashes of camera lenses. "No comment! Get those cameras out of my face!" he roared, but his voice lacked its usual commanding resonance. It sounded frantic, fragile, and terrified.
He broke into an awkward run, heading down the steep hill toward the city center. His mind was a chaotic storm of panic and denial. This is just a temporary freeze, he told himself, sweat breaking out on his forehead despite the bitter cold. I have my personal accounts. I have my private assets.
Forty minutes later, disheveled and out of breath, Julian burst into the marble lobby of the First National Private Bank.
"I need to speak to Harrison immediately," Julian demanded, slamming his palm on the counter of the private wealth division.
The teller looked at him with cool professionalism. "Mr. Vance, Mr. Harrison is currently in an emergency executive meeting. However, I can pull up your account status."
"Do it now," Julian snapped, wiping sweat from his brow. "My corporate card was glitched this morning. I need a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars to my personal checking account."
The teller typed rapidly into her terminal. Suddenly, her posture stiffened. She looked up at Julian, her expression devoid of warmth.
"Mr. Vance, your personal accounts are currently under a temporary legal hold executed by order of the Chancery Court at 12:05 AM today."
"What?" Julian gasped, leaning over the counter. "On what grounds? That's my personal money!"
"The order references an emergency motion regarding joint marital asset preservation and pending corporate audit for misappropriation of funds," she replied calmly. "Furthermore, the lease on your personal vehicle—the 2025 Aston Martin—has been revoked due to non-payment by the primary corporate guarantor, Lumière Management."
Julian backed away from the counter, his chest heaving. The oxygen in the room seemed to vanish. Elena hadn't just cut off the electricity to his penthouse; she had severed every single financial artery keeping him alive.
Desperate, he remembered Chloe.
He hailed a yellow cab on the street, begging the driver to take him to Chloe’s high-rise apartment in downtown Seattle, promising to pay him twice the fare once they arrived.
When they reached the building, Julian took the stairs two at a time up to the twelfth floor. He pounded on the door of apartment 12B.
"Chloe! Open up! It’s me!"
The door cracked open on a brass safety chain. Chloe peered out, her face swollen from crying, her hair pulled back into a messy bun. She was wearing plain sweatpants—a far cry from the silk robes and custom cashmere she had worn just hours earlier.
"Julian?" she whispered nervously.
"Chloe, thank God," Julian breathed, trying to push the door open. "I need to come in. I need to use your phone, your laptop... my accounts are frozen, but my legal team—"
"Julian, stop," Chloe interrupted, her voice flat and cold.
Julian froze. "What?"
"Two process servers were here twenty minutes ago," Chloe said, her voice shaking with fear. "They served me with a subpoena. Elena Sterling’s lawyers are suing me for conversion of private property, grand larceny regarding the emerald pendant, and civil conspiracy."
"Chloe, baby, listen to me—"
"No, Julian! You lied to me!" she sobbed, backing away from the door. "You told me you owned the world! You told me you were building an empire! You don't own anything! You’re completely broke, and now those terrifying lawyers are going to ruin my life!"
"I am going to get it all back!" Julian yelled, gripping the doorframe. "Just let me in!"
"Don't come near me," Chloe said softly, staring at him as if he were a poisonous snake. "The security downstairs was told not to let you up again. If you don't leave, I'm calling the police."

She slammed the door in his face.
The heavy thud of the oak door echoed down the empty corridor, locking Julian out in the cold reality of his new existence.
